Happy New Year! The 2019 Legislative Session is just around the corner. Although legislators meet and work throughout the year, the intense, annual 45-day session begins on January 28 and concludes on March 14. After serving as Minority Caucus Manager for 2 years, I have been elected to the new position of Assistant Minority Whip. I again will serve on the Executive Appropriations Committee (EAC) which makes final determinations on all appropriations and determines what gets funded. I am also a member of the Legislative Management Committee which determines scheduling and additional meeting requests, among its assignments. And, I will continue on the Senate Rules Committee, which assigns legislation to committees. This committee determines a bill's future by assigning it to a specific committee. It can also determine whether a bill gets bottled up or reported out. The Senate Rules Committee has been successful in getting bills out to committees quickly and fairly. It's my feeling that all bills should at least have a public hearing. However, with the increasing number of bills being filed for the session (already over 1,100!), it can be impossible to adequately vet all the bills proposed and introduced.

I have been working through the interim on legislation to present during the upcoming session, as well as legislation coming from the house which I will sponsor in the senate. Some bills have been completed and they are posted on our Legislative Website (le.utah.gov). Among other helpful information, utilizing this website is the best way to keep current on committee hearings (date, time, place, materials, topics, video and audio of live and prior proceedings), and legislation status during the legislative session. For updates on legislation you can also set up email notifications in real time! How to track:   
 
When you search a bill using the search bar at le.utah.gov, you will find a column on the right side of the bill. There is a "Bill Tracking" section. Press the "Track This" button - you will then be tracking that bill.  
 
Community News

Attending city and community council meetings, local schools, and community events are also important to me. If unable to attend, I do try to keep in contact with them to address issues in their particular area. Your local representatives are hard at work representing you! Please see what's happening in your area of District 4.

Introducing Chief Justin Hoyal
I am truly honored to have the opportunity to work and serve in the great City of Holladay. I have worked for the Unified Police Department and Salt Lake County Sheriff's Office for over 22 years. Over the years I have worked in a variety of assignments including patrol, motorcycle squad, SWAT Team, Major Accident Team Investigator, and Homicide/Cold Case Homicide Detective. For the last year, I have overseen the Unified Police Department's Dispatch Center, and the merge of our center with the Salt Lake Valley Emergency Communications Center. I live in West Jordan with my wife and four wonderful children.

My Session Intern

My name is Lisa Nehring and I will be working with Senator Iwamoto as her intern during the 2019 Legislative session. I am a senior at the University of Utah studying Social work and Pre-medicine. Throughout my college career I have volunteered at 4th Street Clinic and at the Lowell Bennion Community Service Center. Currently, I work at the University Neuropsychiatric Institute, and helped start a non-profit called Bags to Beds. My work and volunteer background is what led to my interest in legislation and policy making. I am looking forward to working hard and learning a great deal about the legislative process.

However, it can be challenging due to the high volume and because of our meeting and floor schedules, as well as the time spent reading and preparing legislation.   • If you are waiting to receive a response from me, your email may be accidentally lost or in junk mail etc. Please try again. 
These steps will assist me in replying to you as quickly as possible. I will do all I can to respond in a timely fashion even with the pressures of a general legislative session. Please visit during the session. The Capitol itself, is abuzz with displays, activities and visitors. If you would like to show your support or opposition to any bill, you may testify during public comment at a committee hearing.  
 
I hope to provide you with informative updates regarding legislation I am sponsoring, as well as other pertinent legislation and activities during the upcoming Legislative Session. I appreciate your thoughts about pending legislation. Your input is invaluable and makes a difference. And as always, know that I realize the gravity and honor of representing our community.
