DOES YOUR PROGRAM NEED MORE MONEY?

In addition to money, how about business volunteers, joint projects with employers, donations of equipment, connections with more businesses etc.?  The answer is an obvious yes!  These are types of things you can get when you develop a strategic plan for taking your relationships with private sector businesses from placement, to partnership and on to champion levels of relationships.  At the champion level, businesses will give you money.  Many other benefits will also come to your program because of this close relationship you have developed.

SIXTEEN TYPES OF JOBS THAT ARE
AVAILABLE IN THE MARIJUANA INDUSTRY

The legalization of marijuana is a controversial subject.  I am not wading in on the pro and con arguments.  The reality is as marijuana becomes legal in more places, it does open up a wide range of legal job and career opportunities in those communities.  You may be surprised at some of them.  To learn more about the types of work connected with the marijuana industry, click here.

THE BENEFITS OF DISABILITY ACCOMMODATIONS TO EMPLOYERS
MUST READING FOR PEOPLE WORKING TO INCREASE JOB, INTERNSHIPS AND  WORK EXPERIENCE OPPORTUNITIES FOR JOB SEEKERS WITH DISABILITIES

We often talk about the benefits of accommodations to job seekers.  The results of this study consistently showed that the benefits employers receive from making workplace accommodations are good for their profit margin.  Employers reported that providing accommodations resulted in such benefits as retaining valuable employees, improving productivity and morale, reducing workers' compensation and training costs, and improving company diversity. These benefits were typically obtained with no or low costs.

HOW TO AVOID JOB SEARCH BURNOUT

One of the most prevalent and under addressed barriers to employment is job search burnout.  Job search is filled with rejection, depression and stress.  As the job search goes on, these things take their toll and people job hunt less and less.  It does not take long before people are not doing much job search and filling the time with other more enjoyable activities.  This issue has an impact on all kinds of job seekers and we need strategies to help people deal with this issue.  Click here to go to my LinkedIn article on this topic.

THE FUTURE OF JOBS AND JOB TRAINING
CAN TECHNOLOGY DO YOUR JOB BETTER THAN YOU CAN?

Machines are eating humans' jobs talents. Moreover, it is not just about jobs that are repetitive and low-skill. Automation, robotics, algorithms and artificial intelligence (AI) in recent times have shown they can do equal or sometimes even better work than humans who are  dermatologists,

ONLINE BUT DISCONNECTED YOUNG ADULTS EXPERIENCES WITH ONLINE APPLICATIONS

A minimum wage job with a fast food franchise or a retailer may be short on glamour and pay, but is typically the first rung on the ladder of lifetime employment. National chains now recruit most entry-level workers online, many with applications that include a battery of personality-related questions. These pre-employment personality assessments have become a major obstacle to employment of young adults.

As applications migrated online, employment and training organizations reported that young jobseekers in New York City were finding it more difficult to be hired. JobsFirstNYC began an in-depth investigation documenting the impact of pre-employment personality assessments.

TAPPING INTO THE POWER OF NEURODIVERSITY

Neurodiversity.   It is a term that is increasingly familiar to those in the workforce diversity and inclusion sphere, and for good reason. It is about the strategic integration of people with neurological disabilities into all workplaces, and its practice can yield exceptional results for both employers and employees, including those on the autism spectrum.  Years ago, employers often hired people with disabilities for altruistic, charitable reasons, believing it was "the right thing to do." Later, when the disability and inclusion movement emerged, employers began to appreciate bottom line benefits from embracing disability as diversity. Today's increased focus on neurodiversity indicates even further progress on the part of employers-and refreshingly, it is all about skills.

MANAGEMENT CORNER
HOW THE CREATIVE USE OF DATA CAN IMPROVE YOUR OUTCOMES!

The Corporation for a Skilled Workforce and the Workforce Benchmarking Network   released a report, Learning To Thrive: How Data Can Fuel Better Workforce Development Results - Lessons From The Twin Cities Benchmarking Initiative .  The Twin Cities Benchmarking Initiative involved 20 workforce development organizations, three years, two primary funders, and one intermediary organization. Its activities included a program outcomes data survey "benchmarking" organizations' program outcomes against national averages, peer learning events, and individualized technical assistance. The initiative generated improvements in specific performance measures or short-term process milestones that each organization deemed core to their mission and priorities.  To read the report click here.

RESOURCE ROUNDUP
NATIONAL CENTER ON CRIMINAL JUSTICE AND DISABILITY

Unfortunately, people with disabilities are highly over represented in the numbers of people who have been arrested and convicted.  This helpful resource focuses on the intersection of disability and the legal system.  It has a lot of helpful information for disability programs, reentry programs and the workforce system as a whole.
