Dear

This week Illinois passed four pieces of significant gun reform legislation....what is noteworthy is that we are the first in the country since the Parkland tragedy.

Leaders, advocates, and family members of gun violence victims gathered to give moving testimony on the need for stronger gun laws in Illinois.

By the end of the day, the House sent SB1657 to Governor Rauner's desk which would require gun dealers to obtain licensing through the Illinois Dept. of Financial and Professional Regulation before engaging in selling or leasing firearms.

The House also passed and moved three bills to the Senate. HB1465 raises the minimum age from 18 to 21 in order to purchase an assault rifle. HB1467 initiates a bump stock ban which have been used to illegally turn rifles into automatic weapons. HB1468 designates a 72-hour waiting period on assault rifle sales.

I co-sponsored and supported these bills because Illinois must take an active role in ensuring that we do not stand by and watch as families are torn apart by gun violence. From Las Vegas to Parkland, we have learned what happens when automatic weapons are put before our children.

I am hopeful now more than ever that Illinois has set the tone for other states to join us in strengthening their gun laws. I will keep you updated throughout session as these bills move through the Senate.

As always, if you have questions or need anything at all do not hesitate to reach out to my office at 773-296-4141 or email me at [email protected].
