William Allen White Day events

April 24
- Pete Souza, White House photographer for Presidents Obama and Reagan, will give a lecture and presentation at 7 p.m. at the Lied Center. Free and open to the public. Read the news release. Read a Q&A with Souza in the Lawrence Journal-World.
April 25
April 26
- Hot dog lunch for J-School students, faculty, staff, alumni and special guests. 11:30 a.m., Clarkson Gallery, Stauffer-Flint Hall.
- William Allen White Day program, "The Future of Journalism" panel discussion with previous National Citation award winners and J-School students. 3:30 p.m., Ballroom, Kansas Union. Free and open to the public.
April 27
- Scholarships and Awards presentation, luncheon and Burton W. Marvin News Enterprise Awards. Noon, Ballroom, Kansas Union. (RSVP required)

Associate Dean Scott Reinardy will be honored by the South Dakota State University Department of Journalism and Mass Communication as one of its distinguished alumni on April 18. Reinardy earned bachelor's degrees in journalism and history from SDSU in 1987.
Associate Professor Max Utsler attended the Broadcast Education Association convention where he chaired a Sports Division panel titled: "Careers in Sports: If You Don't Know Where You Are Going Most Any Route Will Get You There." He also attended the past presidents council meeting and sessions on TV news and sports.
Steve Rottinghaus, career and outreach coordinator, visited with approximately 100 students to discuss journalism opportunities at the Cowley County High School Career Expo on April 11 in Arkansas City. At right, students were invited to practice their interviewing skills at the J-School booth.
Nominations for the John Katich Award for Creativity are due to the dean's office by the end of the day today. The Katich award goes to a tenure-track or tenured faculty member who has demonstrated creativity in teaching, research, service or a combination of these areas. The award will be presented at the last faculty meeting of the year on May 4.

Associate Professor Yvonnes Chen on "Ads for E-Cigarettes Today Hearken Back to the Banned Tricks of Big Tobacco
." Chen's fMRI research was prominently featured
to support e-cigarette ads' particular appeal to kids. Read the article here.
Associate Professor Hyunjin Seo gave a presentation on North Korea to the Global Studies Symposium at the Kansas Union on April 12. Seo also served as a panelist at the Faculty Development Program workshop on planning for promotion and tenure at KU on April 16.
Associate Professor Doug Ward led two workshops last week at the Learning Analytics Summit at Indiana University. The workshops focused on getting started with the use of data in analyzing classes, curricula and learning. Ward also made a presentation on KU's work on a learning analytics project funded by a mini-grant from the Association of American Universities. Ward also led discussions earlier this month at a knowledge exchange among four universities that are working to create a new approach to evaluating teaching. That project, funded by a National Science Foundation grant, involves KU, Colorado, the University of Massachusetts and Michigan State. The meeting was held at the University of Colorado, Boulder.
The Diversity and Inclusion Action Group (DIAG) invites the submission of proposals for the 2018-2019 Applied Research Award. The award is open to faculty as well as doctoral candidates. Proposals are due by 5 p.m. April 23. Get the details.

In the Kansas Collegiate Media contest, the University Daily Kansan won 15 individual awards, plus it was named All Kansas in the online division (the highest honor for a website), and the print edition earned a Bronze medal.

Young Alumni Career Panel
Hear from recent KU graduates, including two in strategic communications, on how they landed their first post-college positions and how their international experience helped them achieve their goals. Alumni from a variety of majors will share how they used their study abroad experience to answer questions in their job interviews, how they've used their international experience in their jobs, and what their plans are for the future. The event is at 5:30 p.m. April 17 at the Burge Union, Forum C. Light snacks will be provided.

The Kansas Association of Broadcasters will award up to $2,000 in individual scholarships to next semester's juniors and seniors. Application
deadline is May 1. Get the details.
Students, staff and community members are invited to enter KU Endowment's campus illustration contest. Categories are: New KU Skyline, Fraser Hall, Potter Lake with Campanile, and Strong Hall with the Bronze Jayhawk. Winners will receive $500. Deadline is April 30.

Brian Bracco, 1973 J-School graduate and former TV news executive, visited the J-
School last week. He reviewed graduating seniors' audition reels and resumes and offered job hunting tips.

Julie Johnson Staples, 1978 J-School graduate, was inducted in the KU Women's Hall of Fame last week.
Staples
is currently interim senior minister of the 116-year-old Flatbush-Tompkins Congregational Church in Brooklyn, New York. As a KU student, she was the first African-American editor of the University Daily Kansan. She eventually became the White House correspondent for the Baltimore Sun and The New York Times. In 1994, she earned her law degree from Georgetown University and went on to serve as the Justice Department correspondent for ABC News. She later began a career in international investing at Warburg Pincus and became the firm's first African-American partner. Her career shifted again when she returned to graduate school to study theology and became ordained in the Congregational and American Baptist Church. She serves on the board of the National Association of Congregational Christian Churches. She is pictured above (at right) with Lynette Woodard, who also was inducted last week.
