The Wave
May 4, 2018

The May Day Flowers have bloomed, it would seem, instantaneously.  The students have been enjoying the outside lunches this week. They will soon be starting to use the remodeled back patio for classes outside. Today, they have a "work well done" treat of a movie afternoon! This does not happen often, but we are getting to the end of our afternoon curriculum and we want to make sure that a celebration of sorts is had by all. We will top off the afternoon with freeze pops -  that signify a job well done on the recent fire drill.  They were efficient and were out of the building - calm, cool, and collected - in under 2 minutes.  That is totally what we were going for!  At TRCS, we believe that celebrations are a huge part of both our learning and our community.  We work hard and celebrate that as well.

We are on the last stages of the Administrator search, doing a background check and finishing up the paperwork needed before we announce who will be stepping into this quite simply amazing school.  Be watching the WAVE next Friday for an announcement and for your opportunity to meet our new 2018-19 school leader!

Happy May and let's hope for a sunny weekend!

Carnival Update! June 11th is the day!
The students have selected the theme around the world, but because there are 198 countries, a bit difficult to implement that. The following countries will be their focus:  Australia, Italy,
Brazil, Mexico, China,
India, Canada, Sweden,
Jamaica and Egypt.

We need more parent volunteers to help with running the booths on July 11th. If you can help, please contact Karen Gault. Stay tuned for the date & time of the  next planning meeting!

The Age Old Question...
We want to make it an easy homework spring. All projects have ample time to be completed at school.  Math and Language classes have reading and math (as well as vocabulary), but on pg.  13-14 of your child's planner, is the TRCS Homework Policy. Please do not let your kids overdo their homework time.  2 - 3 hours (or more) a night is way too much.  Please limit to the grade level requests. If you are stopping your kids, please contact their teacher. We need to know how to help your kids find ease and success without the heartache!
Science and Social Studies, Afternoon Classes, Coming to an End!
Our afternoons have one more week, that means that we will be transitioning to Independent Project Science and Independent Project work time. Kids will have a focused afternoon experience in one area for one week. They will complete their proposed and contracted project.  This excluded PBL 1 & 2 - who work on what their calendar needs are at that time.  GO IP!

Parent Tea Invite
The end of the school year is quickly approaching and we want to host a parent tea on May 17th at 3:15. We hope with this advance notice you will be able to work it into your schedule to join us! We always have so much fun checking in with parents and love getting the chance to get to know you all better. Please join us!
Independent Projects
What amazing stories we have heard so far. The love of independent learning is here and now!  Who would not enjoy an extended period of time focused on a subject of your choosing. What would it be? A city?  Advances in aerodynamics? Hair customs? The sky is the limit. All of our teachers have finished devising math problems to challenge and deepen students skills within their subject area. What a great way to see how kids can show us what they can do!  We can't wait.

THIS WEEK:

4th/Novice:  Language Arts (Tues, Wed, Thur) Smarter Balance Testing.  Starting literature IP projects this week as well.
Math:  Will be continuing on with curriculum and getting their math projects and starting on those this week!  A busy week ahead.

5th/Intermediate: Language Arts:  Getting their proposals in for their creative writing project for IP and starting on those amazing projects.
Math: Work on IP Math projects all week!

6th/ Advanced 1:  Language Arts:  Working on literature projects and an introduction to Creative Writing - IP.
Math:  Working on the continuing curriculum, as well as, working on IP math projects this week.

7th/Advanced 2:   Language Arts:  Proposals are in for Literature and Creative Writing.  Tuesday/Wednesday (and possibly Thursday) will be Smarter Balance Testing.  Otherwise the students will be working on their projects.
Math:  Working on math IP Projects, as well as, regular curriculum.

8th, Geometry/PBL 1 & 2:  Language Arts:  Smarter Balanced for TUES/WED/THUR.  After that the students are working on their own calendars.
Math:  Working on Math problems for IP, as well as, regular curriculum.

Our week ahead is a busy one.  Please make sure that homework is to the guidelines, and contact your child's teacher if it exceeds the requested amount.

Please also be aware that this is not an at home project. We are giving plenty of time at school to get this work done. We know that working at home, is sometimes better for some students but we ask that you not help your kids to complete anything that they bring home.  Thank you - we can't wait to see their abilities and talents show their expertise on all of their projects!
