REHEARSAL REMINDER!

Chamber Orchestra rehearsal is this evening, Thursday, May 3 from
6:00pm - 8:00 pm here in Balboa Park.

Please make sure to arrive early to rehearsal to allow time for traffic and to be seated and warmed up.

Adjusted Rehearsal Schedule
On   Saturday, May 5 , SDYS will host our annual  Encore!  fundraising event here in Casa del Prado. The event will take place from 5 pm to 9 pm. Rehearsal times will be adjusted slightly for this day. 

Below is the adjusted rehearsal schedule. Please
note all students must be present 15 minutes before rehearsal begins to be ready and warmed up.

Room 207
  • Wind Symphony: 8:30 am - 10:20 am
  • Sinfonia: 10:45 am - 12:35 pm
  • Concert Orchestra: 12:40pm - 2:30 pm
  • Symphony Orchestra: 2:40 pm - 6:20 pm
  • Chamber Orchestra: 2:40 pm - 9:00 pm (light dinner will be served)

Room 205
  • Wind Orchestra: no Wind Orchestra rehearsal
  • Concert Winds:
  • 2:30 pm - 3:30 pm - regular rehearsal
  • 3:30 pm - 4:30 pm - break (snacks provided)
  • 4:30 pm -5:00 pm - rehearse with Alegria Winds
  • 5:30 pm - 5:45 pm - performance (students released after performance).

CONGRATULATIONS to the winners! Please pick up your basket sometime this week in the SDYS office during normal business hours. If you would like your student to pick up the basket at their rehearsal, please sign and ask your student to bring the attached form when picking up the prize.
Registration is Open!
Registration fee increases to $50 on
May 4 at 12 NOON.

Online registration for the 2018-19 season is officially open! Current students are able to register through the  Parent Portal .  

Auditions will take place May 30-June 16.

All currently enrolled musicians-- including marching band students --must audition in June. The deadline to register is  Monday, May 21 at 12 NOON . Audition assignments will be emailed out to families on Friday, May 25. If you are traveling in the summer, we recommend you plan your trip for after the audition.
Beyond the Staff

Volunteer Opportunities
Encore!

SDYS' annual  Encore!  will take place on  Saturday, May 5 at Balboa Park and we need your help! Volunteers can choose from a variety of activities with flexible schedules to support scholarship recipients at our biggest fundraiser of the year!  
Baby and Me Guest Performer

Would you like to be a guest performer for young children? SDYS is seeking Conservatory musicians to be featured on a Friday morning "Baby and Me Music Class" in Balboa Park. Be a guest performer for 0-4 year olds and their caregivers, playing a piece of music of your choice as well as a classic kid favorite: Itsy Bitsy Spider? Wheels on the Bus? Guest performers needed from
10:45am--12:15pm on these dates: 

  • May 4, 11, 18, 25

This opportunity is particularly great for students who are home-schooled and can be counted for community service hours.

Donate an Instrument
We are accepting wind and string instruments that will all be going to conservatory and community 
students that need them. You can drop them off Monday - Friday during regular business hours, or 
on the weekends during rehearsals.

We have an immediate need for trombones!

Kaavya Raamkumar (Concert Orchestra, Violin I) has been selected as the Concertmaster of the 2018 San Diego All-County Middle School Honor String Orchestra. This is her second year of acceptance into the Honor orchestra. Kudos, Kaavya!

Maximus Chan (Sinfonia and Wind Symphony, Principle Oboe) has been selected to participate in the Sunset Chamberfest Young Composers’ Workshop in June. Kudos, Max!

A Jacobs Masterworks Concert

The month-long salute to Leonard Bernstein’s Centennial kicks off with one of Bernstein’s great early successes, his music to the ballet Fancy Free. One of the leading young violinists in the world, Simone Lamsma, performs Bernstein’s unusually scored Serenade, a work inspired by Plato’s famous Symposium on the subject of love. The concert closes with a couple of richly textured suites from the lively opera/operetta worlds of Richard Strauss and Jacques Offenbach.

This concert is suitable for children ages 5 and up.
