MAFP is celebrating 70 years! On January 16, 1949, eleven family doctors met in Picayune to organize what became the Mississippi Academy of Family Physicians. Above is a picture of our Founder's Dinner from that same year.
In the coming weeks, we'll spotlight moments in our 70-year history on social media and in our publications. That includes February 1, the anniversary of the day we were granted our charter in 1949 as a chapter of the American Academy of Family Physicians.
On January 30 during Capitol Day in Jackson, be there to celebrate our charter anniversary with cake and special presentations from Governor Bryant, the Mississippi House and Mississippi Senate.
You'll see the culmination of our 70-year celebration at Annual Meeting, where we'll have displays and commemorations of big events in our history. Stay tuned!

MAFP's Capitol Day is Wednesday,
January 30! To help foster relationships, we encourage you to ask other family docs in your area to ride with you to Jackson for the morning, afternoon or entire day. Simply put, we are asking you to CRAM your CAR for CAPITOL Day and CARPOOL. The MAFP has set a goal of 50 family physicians to attend our advocacy event.
Our theme will be "Family Medicine Is..." to educate legislators and staff on who you are and what you mean to the community. This special day will kick off our 70-year anniversary of the MAFP, so we need you there to celebrate with us. Register today!

New Foundation Booth Unveiled
This year our booth focuses on educating the public about what Family Medicine is! Wednesday at the MSMA Alliance meeting at the State Capitol, we unveiled our new booth featuring photos of some of our board members. Each photo says "Family Medicine Is" and gives a definition and qualifications to be a family physician. Jewell Buckley of MAFP Foundation manned the booth and represented our Academy.

Family Medicine Spotlighted at UMMC
More than 75 medical students and faculty showed up Thursday as UMMC's Department of Family Medicine was able to show off its accomplishments to future doctors. M1s and M2s came together for lunch and heard from guest speaker Dr. Katie Patterson of Indianola, who discussed being a family physician in rural Mississippi. Patterson, MAFP past president, practices in Indianola.
