Board Elections are Coming and We Need You!
Have you considered volunteering your time on behalf of your community? The current two-year terms of office for two Village Board seats and the Columbia Association Council Representative seat expire on April 30, 2018. Village Board members attend one meeting a month where they oversee village finances, advise and take action on such matters as street and house maintenance, and advocate for changes that will benefit Harper's Choice. The Columbia Association Council Representative serves on the Village Board as an ex officio (non-voting) member and also serves as a voting member of the Columbia Association's Board of Directors.
The nomination period runs from March 1 - March 14, 2018

Next Phase of Construction Begins At HCGH
This week, the next stage of construction began for the 48,000-square-foot addition that will bring much needed space to the hospital. The contractors are starting the necessary work to excavate the land outside the former Emergency Room entrance to create the foundation of the new building. The first step is to remove the existing canopy at the front of the ER entrance.
During the week of March 19, the contractor will be setting up construction trailers on-site. We anticipate more construction vehicle traffic at the hospital's Little Patuxent Parkway entrance.
As you may remember, the addition is being built adjacent to the existing ER and will include a new observation unit and an inpatient psychiatry unit. The entire project is expected to be complete by the end of 2019.
The construction project includes:
· A new 48,000-square-foot addition which will add approximately 40 treatment spaces.
· A new ER entrance, waiting area and evaluation area to improve our patients' experiences and expedite the flow through the ER and hospital.
· A new observation unit adjacent to the ER.
· A new inpatient psychiatric unit.
· Additional treatment spaces for pediatric behavioral health patients to address the unique and growing needs of adolescents with substance use and mental health issues.
· Enlargement of the adult behavioral health unit in the adult ER.

Columbia Cleanup Day Scheduled for Saturday, March 24 in All 10 Villages
Columbia can be even more beautiful, and the environment can be more healthy, after just three hours on Columbia Cleanup Day.
Columbia Cleanup Day will take place on Saturday, March 24 with volunteers simultaneously picking up trash that has accumulated at open space locations in all 10 villages. Nine of Columbia's villages are scheduled to work from 9am to noon, while the Kings Contrivance event will be held from 10am to 1pm.
This is the ninth year that Columbia Cleanup Day has been held since 2009. People who would like to participate can show up at the meeting locations. The meeting locations and clean-up areas are:
- Dorsey's Search: Meet at Dorsey Hall Pool (4649 Columbia Road). Clean the open space behind Dorsey Hall Pool and the playground area.
- Harper's Choice: Meet at Swansfield Neighborhood Center (5659 Cedar Lane). Clean the open space area behind Green Dory Lane, Woodenhawk Circle and Berrypick Lane.
- Hickory Ridge: Meet at Clary's Forest Pool (11615 Little Patuxent Parkway). Clean the open space in the middle of the Little Patuxent Parkway loop.
- Kings Contrivance: Meet at Amherst House (7251 Eden Brook Drive). Clean the open space and natural areas behind Amherst House and near Dickinson Pool. Please note that Kings Contrivance's cleanup will be held from 10am to 1pm.
- Long Reach: Meet at the cul-de-sac in the 6300 block of Tamar Drive. Clean the pathway and natural area from Tot Lot LR16 to Tot Lot LR15 (adjacent to Footed Ridge).
- Oakland Mills: Meet at Oakland Mills Village Center (5851 Robert Oliver Place). Clean along the pathway from Stevens Forest Road going toward Route 29.
- Owen Brown: Meet at the Lake Elkhorn parking lot on Dockside Lane lot off Cradlerock Way. Clean around Lake Elkhorn and the Forebay area.
- River Hill: Meet at Claret Hall in the River Hill Village Center (6020 Daybreak Circle). Clean the open space area between Columbia Gym and River Hill High School.
- Town Center: Meet at the Downtown Columbia Lakefront (10227 Wincopin Circle). Clean around Lake Kittamaqundi.
- Wilde Lake: Meet at Faulkner Ridge Neighborhood Center (15018 Marble Faun Court). Clean the open space around the neighborhood center.

Citizen Jane: Battle for the City Documentary Screening

The Baltimore Metropolitan Council and Columbia Association invite you to a screening of "Citizen Jane: Battle for the City," the story of a particularly prescient woman who started a revolution in urban planning.

Archiving the A.R.T.S - Celebrating the Legacy of the Women of Columbia
Columbia Archives is pleased to announce a program in March in honor of Women's History Month entitled Archiving the A.R.T.S - Celebrating the Legacy of the Women of Columbia.
This program will honor the achievements of women of Columbia who have diligently worked in the fields of art, religion, theater and sports. It will feature archival materials maintained within Columbia Archives (thorough displays and presentations) that highlight the influence their work has had on Columbia.
In addition to the displaying of donated archival materials, the following confirmed honorees - Doris Ligon (Arts), Carolyn Kelemen (Arts/Theater), Carolyn Arena (Religion) and Priscilla Hart (Religion) - will participate in a roundtable conversation focusing on how they have served Columbia and how Columbia has been a supportive environment for solidifying their visions.
The program will be held on March 29 at 6pm at Slayton House, 10400 Cross Fox Lane in the Wilde Lake Village Center. Due to limited seating availability, please register at Eventbrite.

HCCA Board of Directors Meeting
April 3, 2018
During the Tuesday, April 3, 2018, HCCA Board of Directors meeting beginning at 7:00 pm at Kahler Hall, a representative(s) from Howard County Executive Allan H. Kittleman's office will be present to answer and address any questions or concerns that the Board and community may have. As always, the Board meetings are open and we encourage residents to attend and participate in the meetings and this meeting is no exception. Regardless of your availability to attend, if you have any questions or concerns that you wish to convey to Executive Kittleman's staff, please email them to Village Manager Steve Ingley at

Searching For Spring Egg Hunt Saturday, April 14th
The Annual Searching For Spring Egg Hunt, co-sponsored by the Villages of Columbia, will be held on Saturday, April 14 from
10 -11:30am at the Columbia Sports Park in the Harper's Choice Village Center, located at 5453 Harper's Farm Road. No admittance permitted after 10:45AM. Tickets will be available March 19th at Kahler Hall and all Columbia village centers.

SPRING HOME ALTERATION PROJECTS
Spring is right around the corner (we hope!) and with a new season comes change. If you are planning to make changes to the exterior of your home or property, the Architectural Committee reminds you to allow 2-4 weeks for the approval process. The AC meets on the 2nd and 4th Tuesday of each month to review submissions. Applications must be received two weeks prior to the next scheduled meeting to be placed on the agenda, and must include applicable attachments, such as plats, photos, color chips, etc. Applications are available online. Upcoming meeting dates: 3/13, 3/27, 4/10, 4/24.
FREE SOIL TESTING
The Columbia Association has delivered soil test bags to each of the Village offices. Residents pick up a bag, follow the instructions to collect a sample from their Lot and return the bag to the Village office. CA will collect the bag, test the soil and return the test results to the residents, FREE of charge. Stop by Kahler Hall and ask for a soil testing bag.

Architectural Committee Meetings
Changes made to the exterior of homes in Harper's Choice require approval of the Village Architectural Committee (AC).
The AC will meet on the 2nd and 4th Tuesdays of the month at 7:30 PM to review applications.
The deadline to submit applications for approval is two weeks prior to the next meeting date.
