For the third year Luther is hosting Giving Day, one day where we use social media and email to ask alumni, family, parents, and friends to give back and support the Luther Fund (which supports you, the students!). Stop by Marty's from 8:00 a.m. - 8:00 p.m. on Thursday, March 8 to watch the live broadcast and keep an eye Luther's social media sites for some fun giveaways!

Would YOU like to save the world or challenge your magical abilities? Come to the Mott-Borlaug Room in the Union, Saturday, March 10 to participate in the 30-minute ESCAPE ROOMS Extinction Level or School of Wizardry! Time slots will run from 4 to 8 p.m. and you will need teams of 10-12 people. Sign up for a time and escape room on the bulletin board outside of the SAC Office to join in on the fun!

A new electroacoustic duo that uses live looping software and electronics and featuring flute and bass clarinet, WoodWired will rock the Noble Recital Hall of the Jenson-Noble Hall of Music at 7:30 p.m. Friday, March 2. 

Aloha ! Join Storm Bailey and Jackie Wilkie in studying how the school situation in Hawai'i reflects the challenges of education in the United States as a whole. You do not need to be an education major to take this course. There will be informational meetings in Koren 217 regarding the January 2019 Paideia 450: Making Decisions for U.S. Schools the case in Hawai'i on Wednesday March 7 at
7 p.m. and Sunday March 11 at 7 p.m.

Craig Monson, professor emeritus of music at Washington University in St. Louis, will explore how Italian nuns worked the restrictive limitations of the church to their advantage in "Finding their Voice: Music and Architecture in the Convents of Italy." Serving as Luther College's Sihler Memorial Lecture, "Finding their Voice," is at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, March 14, in the Center for Faith and Life Recital Hall. The presentation will include a performance by Luther College's student-led choir Jubilus.

"Making Change," a collection of works responding to issues of hatred and violence, will be on display in the Center for Faith and Life Gallery March 6 through April 6. David Kamm, Luther College assistant professor of art and Gallery Coordinator, created all of the works in the exhibit.
 
Modern Money Theory explains that dollar savings of the private sector and the foreign sector are equal to government deficits. Despite the pervasive thought that governments should run a budget like a household where surpluses equal success, Modern Money Theory shows why that isn't the case. Lyle Luzum, '70, will explain Modern Money Theory at 3 p.m. Thursday, March 8, in the Mott Room of Dahl Centennial Union as part of the Luther Emeriti Colloquium series.
   
Counseling Service is seeking 2 Outreach Assistants for 2018-19. These are work-study positions of 4-5 hours weekly. Must be a self-starter, creative, outgoing and interested in the promotion of positive mental health.  Outreach Assistants will plan and deliver passive and active programming relating to mental health. JOB SHADOW PROGRAM for ALL STUDENTS/ALL MAJORS ! Interested in exploring a certain occupation? Unsure about your major or career goal?  Get an inside look at the day-to-day activities of professionals working in a field that interests you. Stop by the Career Center (2nd floor Union) for more information and to sign up. Deadline to sign up is Friday, March 9.

J-TERM 2019 IN TANZANIA: The Paideia 450 course "People and Parks: Pastoralis and Conservation in East Africa" is a cultural immersion experience based in Maasai villages, small towns, and conservation areas in northern Tanzania. An information meeting will be held on Thursday, March 8, at 9:45 a.m. in Koren 216.  For more information contact Lori Stanley or Emily Neal.
Note: Must have 60 credits by the end of fall semester to apply.

For the third year in a row, a group from Luther College is competing in the National Trumpet Competition. The eight-student ensemble competes in the quarterfinals at 1 p.m. Thursday, March 8, at the University of North Texas, Denton, Texas. The performance will be live streamed. The semifinals are Thursday evening, March 8, the finals are 5:30 p.m. Saturday, March 10, and both events will also be live streamed.

Book Spotlight -- Congratulate Amy Weldon, Associate Professor of English on her new book, The Hands-On Life. The book is in stock and ready for purchase in the Book Shop. 
 
Books In Stock -- The Book Shop wants to get you ready for future lectures and book signings. We have books available by authors that are coming to campus in the near future. Freaks and Revelations, is a book based on March 6 lecturer Matthew Boger. Lights Out, is in for the Ted Koppel lecture, May 1. Get your read on! 
 
The Honors Advisory Committee is pleased to announce the call for applications for the annual Luther College Student Research Symposium, which will be held Friday, May 11.   Information about the symposium, including the on-line application, is available at www.luther.edu/symposium.
 
Call for Proposals:  Iowa College Foundation McElroy Trust Student/Faculty Research Projects for 2018-19. Students must be juniors or seniors in fall of 2018.Applications require dual authorship by proposing student, or team of students, and sponsoring faculty member. Funds may be used to support all expenses of a credible research project except faculty stipends.$2,000 maximum award. Luther is eligible to submit up to four proposals.Internal deadline: April 16. Forms available in the Dean's Office, Union 262 or email brandtja@luther.edu.

RERUNS

Luther College celebrates the many cultures that come together in the name of education through the Diversity Center's annual Ethnic Arts Festival on Saturday, March 3. The festival includes a Country Fair from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. in the Center for the Arts Atrium. Hors d'oeuvres will available for purchase throughout the atrium at the event. There will also be performances representing different cultures at 7 p.m. in the Center for Faith and Life Main Hall.

Campus Programming and the Center for Ethics and Public Engagement presents  distinguishe lecturer Matthew Boger Tuesday, March 6 at 7:00 p.m. in the Center for Faith and Life, Main Hall. Matthews's lecture will include an Academy Award-nominated short film Facing Fear that tells how former neo-Nazi, Tim Zaal, and the gay victim of a hate crime, Matthew Boger, met 25 years after the incident and worked together. Please note that the film does contain some mature language. He will also speak in chapel on Wednesday, March 7

Daryl Davis, black musician, author, actor and activist, has spent the past 20 years meeting and befriending hundreds of Ku Klux Klan members who have since broken ties with the Klan. With his story promoting hope, friendship and conversation, Davis will give a Distinguished Lecture at 7 p.m. Thursday, March 8, in the Main Hall of the Center for Faith and Life.

Dr. Heather Hackman will present the lecture, The Urgency of Now and the Role of White People in Racial Justice Work at 6:30 p.m. Sunday, March 4, in Valders 206. Hackman's lecture, intended to begin the dialogue about how white people can be agents of change in social justice work.     
 
Service Drive only - The drive between Facilities Services and Korsrud Heating Plant buildings is for use by Facilities and Security Staff only. All others, please refrain from using the drive as a shortcut and obey the signs that are in place. This is for the safety of employees as they work between the two buildings.

College Ministries is accepting work study applications for the 2018-2019 academic year. Stop by the College Ministries office or email ministry@luther.edu to get an application form and learn about work study positions. 
 
Gospel Choir will rehearse Friday, March 2, 7-9 p.m. in Jensen Choir room to prepare for Gospel Sunday on March 4. No auditions, come and make a joyful noise with Gospel Choir.

Beta Theta Omega (BTQ) presents a Black Panther Themed Talent Show! The event aims to raise money for a good cause. This year's proceeds will go to the Luther College Diversity Center Book Fund and Machecheta pre-school, Malawi. The show will take place @7 p.m. on March 16 in Marty's. Tickets will be sold from March 10-16 for $3 and $5 at the door. For more information email btq@luther.edu .
The Luther College Balalaika Ensemble will give a 2 p.m. concert Sunday, March 4, in the Center for the Arts Atrium. The family-friendly concert features Ami Hall as special guest vocalist. A 1996 Luther graduate, Hall is a performing artist and educator from Littleton, Colorado.

Winter safety reminder
-- Even though the bulk of the winter season is over, there are still safety concerns with changing wintry weather. Please take care when driving and using walkways as some spots on roads and sidewalks may be slippery. The fluctuating temperatures make keeping up with slippery areas challenging. If you notice a particularly slippery area, please let Facilities Services, (563) 387-1146, or Campus Safety and Security, (563) 387-1111, know as soon as possible so they can manage those areas.

There will NOT be a shopping shuttle March 3 or March 4.

Two concerts featuring nearly 600 high school student musicians, two Luther College ensembles and one Luther faculty trio, will be held March 4-5 in the Luther's Center for Faith and Life Main Hall.

Missing artwork -- Between February 17 and 18 a painting by Luther art major Hannah Tulgren '18, was taken from the Center for the Arts Painting Studio. This artwork is necessary for her Senior Exhibition. Here's an image of the painting. Please contact Hannah with information about the work.
