"Do you want to be more involved in aspects of EMBS management, including its conferences, technical activities and publications? Here is your chance!"
"Becoming an AdCom member opens up enormous networking opportunities and exposes you to opportunities on an international scale."

The IEEE EMBS solicits names for candidates for positions on its Administrative Committee (AdCom) for terms of three years. The AdCom is the administrative and governance body of the IEEE EMB Society. It is required to meet two times each year.

Recent changes in the EMBS Bylaws have redefined the categories of AdCom Members: 5 members now represent geographic areas of interest / priority, 5 representatives whose strength lies in key technical areas of EMBS, and 5 members who are active practitioners in the field of biomedical engineering (e.g. clinicians, health policy, medical industry). In addition, 1 student and 1 young professional shall also be sought.

At this time we seek nominations for a total of nine positions that will serve for the terms listed below, beginning 1 January 2019.

Administrative Committee
  • Geographic: one representative of North America (3 year term)
  • Geographic: one representative of Europe (3 year term)
  • Technical: two representatives (3 year terms)
  • Practitioner: one representative (3 year term)
  • Student: one representative (2 year term)

Nominations of others and self-nominations are permitted. Please submit names, a short biosketch (250 words), a position statement (250 words) and a color picture (headshot) in jpeg format. Please also include a CV (any format) and two names for reference with contact information (name, email and telephone).

The EMBS Nominations Committee is chaired by Past President, Andrew Laine, ([email protected]).

1 Page Research Posters
At least one author of the paper must be registered at the appropriate full conference rate (Member, Non-member, Student member, Student non-member) in order to upload the final paper. If complete payment of a registration fee is not received, authors will not be able to proceed with uploading their final manuscript. While any author of the paper may be registered, only the designated "corresponding author" may upload the final paper. Once a manuscript has been uploaded, the registration fees cannot be refunded. Please be sure that the attending author completes payment and uploads the final paper. This means that they must be the "corresponding author".

MNMC 2018
Biomedical grand challenges facing our society can be addressed at the scale of biology with Micro and Nanoscale technologies. These technologies hold great potential for diagnostics, therapeutics, enhancement of physiological function, disease management, or early monitoring and prevention. IEEE EMBS is sponsoring the fourth biennial Conference on Micro and Nanotechnology in Medicine to foster interaction between scientists, engineers, entrepreneurs and medical researchers in the context of real-world medical needs and issues. The Conference will promote vigorous and open dialogue towards groundbreaking solutions to previously unaddressed problems and cutting edge technologies for faster, more quantitative, and less expensive biomedical solutions using advances in Micro and Nanotechnology.

Technical Activities Spotlight
BioRobotics Technical Committee plays a major role in organizing annual biorobotics conferences
Highlight for the EMBS Technical Committee on BioRobotics
This highlight focuses on two important aspects of the IEEE EMBS Technical Committee on BioRobotics-Organization of international conferences and workshops for knowledge exchange, as well as continued efforts in listserve development and award nominations.

The IEEE EMBS Technical Committee on BioRobotics seeks to expand the impact of biorobotics related research through educational outreach, both within academic engineering, and the larger public community. Conferences, workshops, and international exchanges encourage collaboration and expand knowledge. Over the past quarter, our Technical Committee members have been busy proposing and coordinating workshops, as well as playing senior / organizational roles for several of the prominent, annual robotics and biorobotics conferences (Fig. 1). Technical Committee member Prof. Herman van der Kooij is the Conference Chair for BioRob 2018, along with supporting organizational roles from other TC members, including Profs. Arturo Forner-Cordero, Lorenzo Masia, and Sunil Kukreja. In addition, Prof. Hongbin Liu is organizing a workshop at ICRA 2018, focusing on how "nature inspires robotics." Finally, Prof. Elliott Rouse is organizing an invited session at EMBC 2018, focusing on the neuromechanical underpinnings of human locomotion and wearable robotics. Thus, the Technical Committee on BioRobotics plays a key and fundamental role in the organization and dissemination of biorobotics related research.

In addition, the Technical Committee on BioRobotics continues efforts to develop improved communication and networking tools, as well as nominations for leaders in the field for IEEE awards. A listerve is under development by Prof. Christian Cipriani, which would facilitate communication among the field (similar to the prominent 'Robotics Worldwide' listserve). Additionally, the Technical Committee also seeks to bestow awards on deserving academic and industrial leaders. The EMB Society sponsors twelve awards of member recognition for technical and professional excellence, service, community impact, and publications. The awards range from career achievement awards to distinguished lectures supported by EMBS. Once again this season, it is important for all members and others in the biorobotics interest area to provide worthy candidates for consideration of these prestigious awards. To provide nominations, please contact Prof. Jim Patton ([email protected]) or visit the EMBS webpage on awards.

A New Fight Against Colon Cancer
AS CANCER RATES RISE AMONG YOUNGER ADULTS, RESEARCHERS LOOK FOR NEW SCREENING AND TREATMENT OPTIONS.
Although the overall incidence of colon cancer has been falling over the past few decades, a pair of recent studies revealed a startling trend. In February 2017, researchers published a report showing that colon cancer rates were rising among younger adults. Some skeptics suggested the spike might simply reflect earlier detection and not necessarily represent a real increase in the disease. But a follow-up study found that Gen-Xers and millenials aren't just getting cancer diagnoses earlier; they are dying from colon cancer at slightly higher rates than in previous decades. Death rates among adults aged 20-54 have increased slightly, to 4.3 deaths per 100,000 people in 2014, up from 3.9 per 100,000 in 2004.

A Benchmark Dataset for SSVEP-Based Brain-Computer Interfaces
Yijun Wang, Xiaogang Chen, Xiaorong Gao, Shangkai Gao
This paper presents a benchmark steady-state visual evoked potential (SSVEP) dataset acquired with a 40-target brain-computer interface (BCI) speller. The dataset consists of 64-channel Electroencephalogram (EEG) data from 35 healthy subjects (8 experienced and 27 naïve) while they performed a cue-guided target selecting task. The virtual keyboard of the speller was composed of 40 visual flickers, which were coded using a joint frequency and phase modulation (JFPM) approach. The stimulation frequencies ranged from 8Hz to 15.8Hz with an interval of 0.2Hz. The phase difference between two adjacent frequencies was 0.5π. For each subject, the data included six blocks of 40 trials corresponding to all 40 flickers indicated by a visual cue in a random order. The stimulation duration in each trial was five seconds. The dataset can be used as a benchmark dataset to compare the methods for stimulus coding and target identification in SSVEP-based BCIs. Through offline simulation, the dataset can be used to design new system diagrams and evaluate their BCI performance without collecting any new data. The dataset also provides high-quality data for computational modeling of SSVEPs. The dataset is freely available online.
