Extensive Anesthesia in Early Childhood Tied to Poor Reading, Math Skills

Children who are exposed to a long duration of general anesthesia up to the age of four are at greater risk for poor development as well as reduced reading and number skills as measured by school tests, according to a new Australian study published in the journal Pediatric Anesthesia.

Brain's Window for Language Learning Open Until Adulthood

It has long been known that children learn language more easily than adults, but determining exactly when that ability declines has been something of a mystery. Researchers now report that prime language learning years extend approximately a decade longer than previously thought - until 17.4 years of age. The new findings hold implications for neuroscience, linguistics, developmental psychology and public policy.

Handwriting, Working Memory and ADHD

Handwriting is an important skill for written expression in school and at work.  Many times children with ADHD may display difficulties with legibility and speed of handwriting during school activities.  Recent research examined handwriting, working memory, and ADHD in 16 fourth and fifth-grade children compared to age-matched control children.  Each participant was evaluated for handwriting performance in a simple condition and under verbal or spatial working memory load.

ADD Could Stem from Impaired Brain Coordination

People with attention deficits have difficulty focusing and often display compulsive behavior. The new study suggests these symptoms could be due to dysfunction in a gene - ErbB4 - that helps different brain regions communicate. The gene is a known risk factor for psychiatric disorders, and is required to maintain healthy neurotransmitter levels in the brain.

Test Predicts Autism In Babies As Young As 3 Months

New research suggests that a simple, inexpensive test may be able to accurately identify whether or not children as young as 3 months will go on to have autism.

The National Federation of Families for Children's Mental Health is a national family-run organization linking more than 120 chapters and state organizations focused on the issues of children and youth with emotional, behavioral, or mental health needs and their families.
