News from The Episcopal Cafe

From the Rector

Dear Friends and Parishioners of St. Mary's,

This Sunday we will continue to celebrate the fifty day season of Easter.  In this season the church invites us to embrace the reality of the resurrection and the new life that is promised to us through our baptism.   As many of you are now aware, this morning St. Mary's lost one of our longtime friends and parishioners, John Horeled.  John and his wife Heather have been members here for 39 years and raised their children, Matthew, Joshua and Julia at St. Mary's.   Funeral services will be held for John next week and we will share that information with you as soon as all the plans are finalized.   Many of you have been friends with John for a number of years and I realize that this is difficult loss for you.  Please keep Heather and the entire Horeled family in your prayers.  John Horeled has now received the gift of new and eternal life promised to him at his baptism.   Let this be our hope and consolation.

Please mark your calendar for our next Community Meal on Saturday, May 19th from 5:00-7:00 p.m. We could use extra help this month so if you are free please contact Tracy Higgins to volunteer.

Thank you to everyone who help make the service for Barb Bishop so lovely. I especially want to thank Sandy and the Choir for all the music they provided.   I am grateful to all those who set up and cleaned up after the lunch, and to those who prepared the churchyard as well as those who served on the altar.  It was a lovely service and a wonderful tribute to Barb.

See you all on Sunday

Graduate News!

Lydia Kenyon , daughter of Tom and Amy Koegel, was accepted into the honors program at Illinois State University.  Her major is special education and she begins classes in fall of 2018.

Parents/Grandparents:  If there is about to be a new graduate in your family, we'd love to share the good news!  P lease let us know all about your graduate (Junior High, High School, College, Grad School), the school they're graduating from, and the school (or job) that will be the next step. You may include other information as well, such as scholarships or awards received.  A simple write-up can be submitted to the Parish Office ; the good news will be included in upcoming issues of  The Magnificat Weekly .
THE FEAST OF PENTECOST

Sunday, May 20 , is the Feast of Pentecost, which marks the coming of the Holy Spirit and the Birthday of the church in the world. In celebration, everyone is encouraged to wear red .   Guess who bought red shoes just for the occasion?!!
There will be a renewal of our Baptismal vows at the 8:00 a.m. service, and we will celebrate the baptism of Hunter Barry Horn at the 10:00 a.m. service.

Do you speak another language in addition to English?   Then we could use your help at the 10:00 a.m. Pentecost service.  As  you may or may not know, we have a wonderful Pentecost tradition here at St. Mary's. The Pentecost reading of the Acts of the Apostles 2:1-21 is read in several different languages simultaneously, to illustrate the scripture passage: "All of them were filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other languages, as the Spirit gave them ability." (Acts 2:4)

In the past we've had speakers in Spanish, French, Italian, Latin, German, Greek, and even Russian! Any language is welcome!!!!   If you are interested, please contact Amy in the office. She will get you a copy of the reading in your preferred language, or you may use your own foreign-language Bible if you have one.

Celebration of the Life of Deacon Barb

Thanks to ALL who planned, participated in, and attended the service for Deacon Barb Bishop.  It was a beautiful day, and it was wonderful to see so many friends, family, parishioners, and clergy in attendance, not only from Illinois, but from around the country.
