D'VAR KESHER:
Prophets are People
|
|
“Prophets are people of deep love and compassion.”
-Rabbi Abraham Joshua Heschel
|
|
Greetings!
Rabbi Abraham Joshua Heschel marched with Martin Luther King Jr. in Selma, and was a key figure in the civil rights movement in the 1960s. Prophets, he wrote, are people of deep love and compassion. Importantly, at least modern prophets, are also real people, who make real differences. This week, CJDS celebrated the legacies of these two prophets by hearing the stories of community members who seek justice, learning songs from the civil rights movement, studying texts, illuminating words of hope and inspiration, and identifying what is still left for us to do. And during tomorrow’s special MLK themed Kabbalat Shabbat program, through text study involving moral and ethical dilemmas, music, art, and language arts, all of our students in Kindergarten through sixth grade will take part in an interactive stations that examine probing questions like "What is a legacy?" And what does it mean to "march together?"
As a founding advisor for the tzedakah club, I have had the great privilege to see how children year after year strive to become the prophets Rabbi Heschel speaks about. This year students buoyed the spirits of alumni student Bradley Rothbaum (who struggled with cancer diagnosis and treatment). They wore orange, wrote letters, posed for photos of themselves smiling with thumbs up to offer him hope. And Bradley received the gift and is thankfully cancer free.

Tzedakah club students also researched the needs of their community and launched an initiative to bring food, diapers, and other essential goods to families in central ohio by their contributions to the Mid Ohio Food Bank. Some students even raised money by holding lemonade sales for the initiative.
Moreover, they strove to tackle the specter of people they saw on the street and outside of grocery stores who were asking for help. Students created blessing bags filled with items like warm gloves, snacks, tissues, and each one had a handwritten note with a blessing. Every CJDS student took home a blessing bag to share with those in need. One student was so excited to share her blessing bag that she searched for someone to help on her way home from school. As it turned out, someone in need was there. When she offered her blessing bag, the receiver offered blessings right back, “God bless you.” he said.

|
|
May we all strive to remain awake and responsive to the call to compassion.
“Human progress is neither automatic nor inevitable... Every step toward the goal of justice requires...the tireless exertions and passionate concern of dedicated individuals.”
-Martin Luther King, Jr.
Shabbat shalom,
Susan

- Socks (adult)
- Granola/protein bars
- Hand warmers
- Toothbrushes and toothpaste
- Soap

JewishColumbus Visits CJDS
|
Last week, members of the JewishColumbus Core Funding Committee came to CJDS to learn more about our school and mission.
The JewishColumbus Core Funding Committee members enjoyed presentations from staff, faculty and students. The CJDS journalism club interviewed the visiting community volunteers about leadership and they also created a wonderful presentation for our guests, which may be viewed
HERE.

LIFECYCLES In our community, at every point, our families are perpetually entering new stages in their lives. In keeping with the tradition of living Jewishly, CJDS acknowledges, honors, and celebrates these moments: Births, B’nei Mitzvah, graduations, marriages, and in moments of illness, healing and loss.

HAKARAT HATOV
The Hebrew term for gratitude is הַכָּרַת הַטוֹב (Hakarat HaTov), which means "recognizing the good."
To
Gayle Kuhr for volunteering in the Kindergarten classroom, your support is greatly appreciated.
To
Yehudit Kanfer and
Joanna Vilensky for their extraordinary presentation given to the JewishColumbus Core Funding Committee. Our guests were impressed with the complex, creative and nuanced lesson. We are grateful for your time and creativity.

CJDS Mom's Night Out!
January 21 from 6-9pm
The mom's of CJDS are planning a “Mom’s Night Out” at the New Albany
Board and Brush
(close to the school).
If you haven’t been yet it’s a fun, hands-on, activity and you get to leave with a custom item you made yourself (here is a sample one I made a few weeks ago). Even if you’re not very “crafty” the process is very easy and they’re there to help! Join us, get out of the house, and spend time with other moms --- and leave with a meaningful personalized decoration for your home!
Warm regards,
Sara Martin-Fuller (1st Grade mom)

HOT LUNCH
As in the past, we are so grateful to all the help from the community members - grandparents, friends, parents, and others – on whom we rely to serve hot lunch to our students. Our volunteers bring such a warmth and love to our students and we love having all of you! In order to make this sign-up process even more smooth this year, we would love each family (any family member or friend) to sign up for two dates during the whole year to serve lunch. It can be a parent, a grandparent, a special friend - anyone who is interested in spending time with our wonderful students and serving them food.
