National Heritage Area Bill Advances
On April 11th, 2018 Susquehanna Heritage President Mark Platts joined Congressman Lloyd Smucker and Columbia Mayor Leo Lutz at the U.S. House Federal Lands Subcommittee hearing on H.R. 2991, the Susquehanna National Heritage Act. This bill sponsored by Rep. Smucker will designate all of Lancaster and York Counties as America's 50th National Heritage Area with Susquehanna Heritage as the Local Coordinating Entity. Congressman Smucker and Mayor Lutz testified in support of the bill. Read the Mayor's testimony here  and watch the hearing here (H.R. 2991 runs from 1:01:03 to 1:21:28.)   We very much appreciate Congressman Smucker's leadership with this effort, along with the great support we've received from so many community groups and elected officials like Mayor Lutz. HR 2991 was recently marked up and reported out of the House Natural Resources Committee and now awaits a vote by the full U.S. House of Representatives. It is easy to help us get kids on the river, lead them through a Junior Ranger certification, and discover wildlife in our local waterways. Exploration is fun for ALL AGES at the Zimmerman Center, Columbia Crossing River Trails Center, and throughout the Susquehanna Riverlands!

River Experience 2018: River Fun on June 1st

Set amid sweeping vistas of the Susquehanna at day's end, you won't want to miss a casual evening at the river sampling food and beverages from local restaurants, breweries and wineries; out bidding your friends in a river-centered silent auction; tapping your toes to live jazz; and, if the winds are with us, there will even be a hot air balloon!

The River Experience is an opportunity to mingle with old friends and make new ones who also love the river. Tickets on sale now!

We're so excited to be working with a great group of partners to host the Susquehanna Riverlands Trail Festival.
  • Join us at Columbia River Park to paddle the Susquehanna river or to hike and bike the Northwest River Trail.  There will be live music by the Andy Mowatt's Steely Jam, displays and activities from regional organizations.
  • Watch high school students from across the Keystone State team up in pairs of two and put their canoeing skills to the test against other high school teams in the Chesapeake Bay Foundation's Canoe Classic!
  • Enjoy a 3 mile hike that starts at High Point Scenic Vista and follows the Mason Dixon Trail through the Wilton Meadow preserve, mostly downhill. The hike affords excellent views as it traverses through meadows and woodlands and ends at the John Wright Restaurant.

Join us to HIKE, BIKE, PADDLE, and PLAY at the Susquehanna Riverlands Trail Festival on June 2nd. Register for the Wilton Meadows Hike & Canoe Classic on the Susquehanna Riverlands website.
