Unwarranted: The Human Cost of Fines - Presented by the Delaware Center for Justice
Saturday, January 19, 5:00 - 7:00 p.m.
at the Christina Cultural Arts Center
(705 N. Market Street)
In 2017, there were over 40,000 warrants issued for the arrest of Delawareans who owed on average less than $500 related to misdemeanor offenses. We asked impacted community members to share their stories about how warrants affected their ability to get a job, drive to doctor's appointments, and generally function day-to-day. We promised we'd use their voices for two things: art and change. Please join us for an evening of community, art, and music and learn about the experiences of people who can't pay their court fines and our proposed solutions. Click here to RSVP.

The Delaware Supreme Court: Race and Justice
Sunday, January 20, 10:10 a.m. in Community Hall
Chief Justice Leo E. Strine, Jr. and Justice Collins J. Seitz, Jr. will speak about race and justice in the Delaware courts. In recent years, the Delaware Supreme Court has launched multiple projects to examine the problems of race and poverty in achieving civil and criminal justice and to identify potential reforms. Chief Justice Strine has said that these current efforts recognize that, although our Judiciary and State have had high moments in addressing racial discrimination, such as the iconic 1952 ruling of Justice Seitz's father, then Vice Chancellor Collins J. Seitz, in Belton v. Gebhart (ordering black students to be admitted to white schools), our state, including its Judiciary, has yet to truly remedy our lengthy history of racial inequality.
