LEGAL & LEGISLATIVE UPDATE

Governor Phil Murphy said on January 31 that minimum wage talks remain at the "conceptual level" as he starts to negotiate with Democratic leaders in the state Legislature on the specifics of how to gradually raise the state's hourly base pay to $15.

Murphy reiterated that he supports an incremental increase to $15 an hour that is free of exemptions for any workers. Senate President Steve Sweeney is considering exemptions for farmworkers and teenagers, among others.

Democratic leaders, including Assembly Speaker Craig Coughlin, are all on board with a gradual bump in the minimum wage - which is currently $8.60 - to $15 an hour. In addition to figuring out which sectors to exempt, if any, they will need to work out how long before the $15 an hour is fully phased in.

For Owners, Managers, and Staff Engaged in
Workforce and Compliance Issues

2018 is a key year in New Jersey with the election of a new governor and changes in the legislature's leadership. At the national, state and local levels, there will be changes in tax regulations and, additionally, there are workplace issues that impact your ability to stay focused and maintain a healthy working environment such as sexual harassment, salary compensation, and drug and substance abuse laws. This is an opportunity to start the new year on top of your operational game plan and not behind the eight ball.

Topics include: sexual harassment, marijuana and NJ law, wage and hour compliance, staffing in the Murphy Administration, and tax changes in 2018.

Key attendees should include: operations and business managers, senior level recruiters and sales professionals, and owners and managers.
