Series: The "I Am" Statements of Jesus

"The Bread: It's All About What You Take In
"
Scripture Lesson: John 6:35-38
This Sunday
Is it empty or complex carbs for us? As bizarre as that question may seem, this Sunday I'll have examples of both in worship. Maybe even a few more options. The difference between empty and complex carbs is that one helps the body do what it needs to do, while the other either does nothing or diminishes body function. So, do you choose Wonder Bread (something many of us grew up on) or Multi-grain; cinnamon rolls or bran muffins? When Jesus said, "I am the bread of life" which was he talking about? He has just fed the five thousand, and everyone had what they needed. He then walked on water, met the disciples on the sea and immediately arrived at their destination. But the key question comes just before Jesus identifies himself as the bread of life. The key question was asked by those who sought him. They asked, "What shall we do that we may work the works of God?" Jesus follows up with some pretty specific stuff. So we'll explore some of that this Sunday. It's all about choices we make, kind of like the choices we make regarding what we put in our bodies. To prepare let me expand the reading and take you back to the beginning of chapter 6 and have you read from verse one to fifty-one. We won't go through all of it on Sunday but it certainly prepares us for what we need.

Way of Discernment Stud

Starts March 4
Pastor Laura will begin a new adult small group to work through the Way of Discernment volume from he Companions in Christ series. The group will meet on Sunday evenings from 6:00-8:00pm, beginning March 4 and run for approximately 3 months. If you are interested in a copy of the book, see Pastor Laura or order one from an online retailer. Used copies are available for about $10. All are welcome. Come when you can. Don't stay away just because you can't be there every week.

UMW Special Mission Award
The United Methodist Women (UMW) of Aldersgate are requesting nominations for the Special Mission Award. Any person in the church is eligible for this award based on service to the church and the community but special attention is given to those who participate in or support UMW and their mission projects.

Church Work Party
Saturday, March 24
Please join us on Saturday, March 24 from 9:00am-12:00pm as we work outside on the church landscaping. It takes many helping hands to make the church look beautiful and welcoming. If you can rake, prune and pull weeds, we could use your help. Please bring you favorite gardening tools and gloves. Dress for the weather. Come when you can; leave when you must. All are welcome!

Easter Festivities
We will have the annual Easter Egg-Stavaganza and Flashlight Easter Egg Hunt along with another Egg Hunt on Easter Sunday. These events are joy-filled times for our children, and families from the surrounding community come and join in on the fun. Your help is needed to make these events a big success so please sign up on the attendance form to volunteer or email Jen Hoerber.
- Volunteer at the Egg-stravaganza on Saturday, March 31 from 10:30am - Noon by staffing a craft or activity table, helping with refreshments, or leading a story.
- Volunteer at the Flashlight Egg Hunt on Saturday, March 31 at 7:00pm by helping with the Ice Cream Sundae Bar.
- Come stuff Easter Eggs on Monday March 19 at 6:00pm and also on Wednesday, March 28 at 11:30am.
- Donations of small wrapped candy and toys are being accepted now through March 28. Look for a collection box in the narthex.

Confirmation Classes
Classes to prepare for confirmation will start in April and are open to any youth in 6th - 12th grade. In the classes lead by Jen Hoerber and Pastor Brad, the youth will learn more about God and faith. Those who wish will be confirmed on Sunday, June 10. Confirmation is an opportunity to respond to the grace of God and to promise to live as a person of faith. It is an important step in our spiritual journeys. You can support the confirmation class by volunteering to be a confirmation mentor, lifting them and the leaders up in prayer, and staying informed by reading the Confirmation Connection article in the newsletter. Sound Help Wanted
Sound operators are needed for both the 9:00am and the 11:00am. Training will be provided. For more information, please email Tom Blakney or call him at 206-310-6296.

Ushers Needed - BOTH Service
More ushers are
GREATLY
needed at both services. The duties are simple: to greet people and pass out bulletins, to assist visitors and help them find a seat, to light and extinguish the altar candles, to collect and store the offering, to take a headcount, and then tidy the sanctuary after the service. The ushers work a rotating schedule and with enough ushers, that would mean helping once every 4-6 weeks.

Mission Sunday on Earth Day
April 22 will be Mission Sunday this year and the Green Team will be helping to design a decidedly green way to be in mission in our community. If you have ideas, suggestions, or want to be part of a particular team, see Pastor Laura or anyone on Green Team.

Update from Green Team: Waste-Free events
The last few all church events have been great examples of reducing our contribution to the landfill from meals at church. We've been composting and recycling more and throwing less away. As you have heard, the cups and plates we use are compostable. There is plenty of dinner ware that is washable and we are getting better about how to sort it all out. What you may not know is that recycle and compost is free for the church, but we pay for our landfill contributions. So the more we can compost and recycle, the less it costs us financially, not to mention the less impact it makes on the planet. Keep up the good work. Take the challenge to make your next event at church free of landfill waste!

Staff Liaisons
Do you want to find ways to honor and support an Aldersgate staff member? Are you willing to meet with a staff member once a month to see how they are doing and pray for them regularly? Would you be willing to work with them if they were having a concern regarding the church? As our Core Leaders Team (CLT) transitions more fully to a Single Board Governance model and the functions of what used to fall under Staff Parish Relations (SPR) Committee now fall with CLT, the staff liaisons that SPR once provided need to be handled differently. We are looking for one lay member of the congregation for each of our 17 staff members who is willing to serve in this role. It's a great way to get to know a staff member better. It's a great way to serve your church. It's a great way to grow in your faith. Win-Win-Win. See Pastor Laura if you are interested in helping with this important ministry. Pastor Laura will provide guidance for these positions and will make sure that each liaison is well-matched with a staff member.

Young Adult Ministry: At the Crossroads
Monday, March 5
Young adults are invited to dinner at the Crossroads Mall on the first Monday of the month. The March dinner March 5 from
7:00 -
9:00pm. We will be gathering by the Clock/Stage outside of Joann's in the center of the mall at 7:00pm before dispersing to order food and regrouping for dinner together.
This is the an open and inclusive community. The goal is to create fellowship amongst Young Adults founded on the love demonstrated by Jesus Christ for all people. Contact is Katie Olleman.

UMCOR Offering
On Sunday, March 18 we will take a special offering to help fund the United Methodist Committee on Relief. UMCOR is a non-profit organization dedicated to alleviating human suffering around the globe. Their work reaches people in more thatn 80 countries, including he United States. UMCOR's work includes programs and projects in disaster response, health, sustainable agriculture, food security and relief supplies. Your generous gifts to UMCOR bring light out of darkness. Please give generously.

Mission & Outreach Team Update
The Mission & Outreach ministry team met last week to review existing projects and consider new projects. Jean Rummel gave an interesting presentation about Jennifer Ting's inspiring Days for Girls mission work in Malawli. For more information about this mission project, please see the Outreach bulletin board (across from the drinking fountains). The team made financial disbursements to:
- Katherine Parker - our covenant missionary
- The Pastor's Discretionary Fund
- Backpacks for Kids - Weekend food for hungry children
- Jennifer Ting's Days for Girls International
The Mission & Outreach team meets quarterly. Everyone is welcome to attend and participate in the discussion. The next Mission & Outreach Team meeting is May 8 at 7:00pm.

UMW Funds Dispersed
The United Methodist Women Bake Sale in December netted over $1400. At least $550 was from craft items donated by church members. A huge thanks to all who baked, worked and donated crafts and, of course, to those who bought these items. We couldn't have been this successful without all of you!
Recently the UMW members from Mary Martha and Deborah Circles met to decide where to donate this money. Recipients this year are Sophia Way, Congregations for Kids (in Bellevue School District), Friends of Youth (including Griffin Home, Renton) and Days for Girls (Jo Fritze and Jennifer Ting). Our UMW was also able to meet their annual pledge to the District.
