RE Reflections
Eva Newbold, Director of Religious Education
We have all made it past the holidays and into the new year. School has restarted, we’ve returned to our jobs, and our routines have begun again. The new year is one of the best times for reflection and this perfectly complements this month’s worship theme of possibility. When I think of the word “possibility,” one of the first thoughts that come to my mind is this quote:
“And now we welcome the new year, full of things that have never been” – Rainer Maria Rilke
Coincidentally, this is the quote I have outside the DRE office this month. I love this quote because it hits on exactly what is so enticing about the new year. It provides us the perfect opportunity for reflection, both on the past year and on our hopes for the year to come.
This past year held a lot of social strife and discord, and has been scary and discouraging for many. It can be hard sometimes to see past all of the ignorance and hatred, the violence, and the lack of empathy and understanding. Despite this, I am hopeful, and I look towards the possibilities of the future. My job as the Interim DRE makes this especially easy as I look towards the children in our RE program. These bright, caring, thoughtful young people will bring us into a brighter future. That thought gives me hope for the possibility of a future with less hate and more love and compassion.
If we can embrace an inter-sectional view of the world and learn to work together with people of all ages, races, genders, classes, and other social classifications, to listen to their experiences, even though they may be very different from our own, then we can truly begin to lean in to what is possible. I am so thankful to be a part of the UUCS community, which endeavors to do just that.
I hope, in this coming year, we can all embrace the possibilities and work together for a better world.
All the best,

I Heard the Owl Call My Name by Margaret Craven
Amid the grandeur of the remote Pacific Northwest stands Kingcome, a village so ancient that, according to Kwakiutl myth, it was founded by the two brothers left on earth after the great flood. The Native Americans who still live there call it Quee, a place of such incredible natural richness that hunting and fishing remain primary food sources.
But the old culture of totems and potlatch is being replaced by a new culture of prefab housing and alcoholism. Kingcome's younger generation is disenchanted and alienated from its heritage. And now, coming upriver is a young vicar, Mark Brian, on a journey of discovery that can teach him—and us—about life, death, and the transforming power of love.

14.5' x 16.5', low-pile, easy to clean, and in a darker neutral color that won't show dirt. A donation from a carpet vendor would be great. Contact Rebecca at
