William Allen White Day events

April 24
  • Pete Souza, White House photographer for Presidents Obama and Reagan, will give a lecture and presentation at 7 p.m. at the Lied Center. Free and open to the public. Read the news release.

  • Hot dog lunch for J-School students, faculty, staff, alumni and special guests. 11:30 a.m., Clarkson Gallery, Stauffer-Flint Hall.
  • William Allen White Day program, "The Future of Journalism" panel discussion with previous National Citation award winners and J-School students. 3:30 p.m., Ballroom, Kansas Union. Free and open to the public.
April 27
  • Scholarships and Awards presentation and luncheon and Burton W. Marvin News Enterprise Awards. Noon, Ballroom, Kansas Union.
Note: The University Theatre is offering a special discount to the April 27 showing of  "Spring Awakening"  for anyone attending the WAW150 events. Faculty and staff
Associate Professor Carol Holstead did on-air fundraising for Kansas Public Radio on April 7  during the weekly quiz and comedy shows "Wait Wait ... Don't Tell Me" and "Ask Me Another."

Nominations for the John Katich Award for Creativity are due to the dean's office by Monday, April 16. The Katich award goes to a tenure-track or tenured faculty member who has demonstrated creativity in teaching, research, service or a combination of these areas. The award will be presented at the last faculty meeting of the year on May 4.
Research and presentations
Janice Marie Collins, KU's inaugural Visiting Enhancing Excellence Scholar, presented a lecture, "Moving through the Margins and Transforming the Classroom," on April 2 at the Kansas Union. Collins discussed Active Centralized Empowerment, a paradigm, theory, praxis and critical pedagogy that she developed that encourages movement from the margins through self-empowerment.

Professor Chuck Marsh's article, "Indirect Reciprocity and Reputation Management: Interdisciplinary Findings from Evolutionary Biology and Economics," has been accepted for publication in  Public Relations Review.

The Diversity and Inclusion Action Group (DIAG) invites the submission of proposals for the 2018-2019 Applied Research Award. The award is open to faculty as well as doctoral candidates. Proposals are due by 5 p.m. April 23. Get the details.

Graduate Student Appreciation Week
The School of Journalism Graduate Studies Office hosted a luncheon and awards presentation April 5 for Graduate Student Appreciation Week. Awards were presented for:
  • Most Creative Research Paper Title: Nyan Lynn
  • Outstanding Graduate Teaching Assistant: John Watson
  • Outstanding Graduate Student: Roseann Pluretti
  • Most Resilient: Alberto Araujo
  • Most Productive Researcher: Yuchen Liu
Student news and opportunities
Congratulations to Jackson Kurtz, who tied for 13th place in the TV 2 News category of the national Hearst Journalism Awards competition. Earlier this year, Kurtz placed ninth in the TV Features category.
Great Plains Journalism Awards
KU student media outlets were selected for four honors in the Great Plains Journalism Awards, sponsored by the Tulsa Press Club.
  • Conner Mitchell was named Great Plains Student Editor in Chief of the Year, and Darby VanHoutan was named Great Plains Student Writer of the Year. Those awards come with $1,500 scholarships.
  • KUJH was named Great Plains Student Broadcast of the Year. Mallory Houser was producer of the broadcast.
  • The University Daily Kansan was named Great Plains Student Newspaper of the Year.
Great Plains covers Arkansas, Iowa, Kansas, Missouri, Nebraska, North Dakota, Oklahoma and South Dakota. Scholarships will be awarded at the May 4 Great Plains Journalism Awards Luncheon in Tulsa, Oklahoma, at the Mayo Hotel.

Courtland Triplett was accepted to participate this summer in the Hoover Institution's Summer Policy Boot Camp, a weeklong residential program designed to teach students how to think critically about policy issues. Triplett is a sophomore minoring in journalism.

Vince Filak's Dynamics of Writing blog featured a story about the "Royal Dozen," the 12 J-School students who spent their spring break covering the Kansas City Royals during spring training in Surprise, Arizona. Read the blog post here. 
The Kansan accepting applications for editor, business manager

The Kansan is looking for candidates who are interested in being editor-in-chief or business manager for the summer or fall semesters. Interested students should submit proposals to jschlitt@kansan.com by 11:59 p.m. on Sunday, April 15. Email Jon Schlitt for inquiries about the positions and details on applying.
Fellowships
The Tom Murphy Fellowship is designed to develop and enrich a recent KU graduate interested in pursuing a career in sports and entertainment marketing. This competitive position provides the opportunity to work at Octagon, a leading global marketing agency, and learn from top experts in the field. The candidate will work closely with a variety of divisions, including creative, research, media rights and sponsorship consulting to learn about the intricacies of sports and entertainment marketing. The six-month fellowship in Chicago runs from June 15 to Dec. 31, 2018, and pays $2,700 a month. Deadline is April 13. Learn more here.

Education New Zealand is experimenting with a new initiative for U.S. senior journalism students or recent graduates. ENZ is offering three journalism students or recent journalism graduates the opportunity to travel to New Zealand in June 2018 on the Journalism Fellowship, with costs such as travel and accommodations covered. Informational booth

Michelle Harris, director of marketing at Alenco, will host an informational booth from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. April 18 in the Clarkson Gallery to discuss job opportunities at the organization. Alenco is a family-owned home improvement business in Lenexa, Kansas.
Scholarships and contests
The deadline is today for students to submit photos and videos for the J-School's "Diversity and You" competition. Entrants have a wide latitude to express their views of diversity as it affects them and others. Awards will be offered in each category: $400 for first place, $200 for second place, and $100 for third place. Learn more here.

The Kansas Association of Broadcasters will award up to $2,000 in individual scholarships to next semester's juniors and seniors. Application deadline is May 1. Get the details.

Students, staff and community members are invited to enter KU Endowment's campus illustration contest. Categories are: New KU Skyline, Fraser Hall, Potter Lake with Campanile, and Strong Hall with the Bronze Jayhawk. Winners will receive $500. Deadline is April 30. Learn more here.

Alumni update
Matt Gardner, 2001 J-School graduate, has been promoted to vice president, digital media and emerging technology, for the St. Louis Blues. He previously was senior director, promotions and digital strategy.
