Baby Steps Head off a Fussy Eaterer
|
[Source: Medical X-Press]
Getting kids to try new foods can become a daily showdown. One promising approach: expose babies early on to varied tastes and textures.
Researchers in Brisbane, Australia, found that food experiences when just 14 months old can influence the eating habits that children will exhibit at age 3. And introducing a variety of fruits and vegetables and other types of foods early on is key to a better diet quality later on.

Exposure of Children to Nature Yields Fewer Behavioral Problems
|
[Source: Medical X-Press]
The city lifestyle has been criticized as a key reason that children are disconnected from nature. This has led to an unhealthy lifestyle in regard to active play and eating habits. Even worse, many young children do not feel well psychologically-they are often stressed and depressed. Sixteen percent of preschoolers in Hong Kong and up to 22 percent in China show signs of mental health problems.

Study Pinpoints Down Syndrome Milestone
|
[Source: Disability Scoop]
Individuals with Down syndrome continue to learn new skills well into adulthood, according to a study that's offering a timetable of what to expect from those with the chromosomal disorder.
Most people with Down syndrome are able to walk by 25 months of age, speak reasonably well by the time they're 12 years old and manage their own hygiene by age 13, according to
findings published online recently in the American Journal of Medical Genetics Part A.

Teen Brain Volume Changes with Small Amount of Cannabis Use
|
[Source; Science Daily]
At a time when several states are moving to legalize recreational use of marijuana, new research shows that concerns about the drug's impact on teens may be warranted. The study, published in The Journal of Neuroscience, shows that even a small amount of cannabis use by teenagers is linked to differences in their brains.

How A Dental Clinic Is Filling A Void For Those With Special Needs
|
[Source: Chicago Tribune]
In a sunlit room down a white hallway in St. Bernard Hospital on Chicago's South Side, Francine and Rodney Mitchell are waiting.
Their teenage son, Andy, lies on an operating table not far away, asleep amid the beeps of monitors, the hiss and thump of an oxygen machine, and the unmistakable, high-pitched whir of a dental drill. Andy has intellectual and physical disabilities, is not easily able to communicate or control his own body, and though he has survived and even thrived under the care of two dedicated parents, routine dental care has been difficult to obtain.

Fine motor activities are so important to strengthen little hands before they're ready to do all the writing that's waiting for them in kindergarten and beyond. Try some of these simple, low-prep activities!
For years, I've seen fun fine motor activities all over the Internet. Truthfully, we didn't take time to do many of them. My three oldest kids seemed to have strong fine motor skills without much extra attention from me. I still remember our middle son fitting a tiny earplug jack into its spot when he was just one year old.

"Snow" Much Fun
|
[Source: Doyle Speech Works]
It seems this week the snow was falling across the entire nation. Snow in Tennessee, Oregon, and Louisiana. Everywhere, except right here in New Hampshire. It has been bitter cold, though and we have a lovely base of white to play in. I just love the snow! I love how clean everything looks with a fresh coat of white. I especially, love a snow day (who doesn't?). After all the reds and greens of December, the visual and auditory overload, I relish the white, stillness of a snowfall.

Problem-Solving Skills for Hostile Teens on the Spectrum
|
[Source: My Aspergers Child]
Addressing hostility and aggressiveness in teens with Asperger's (AS) and High-Functioning Autism (HFA) can be a frustrating and demanding process. The challenge for parents and teachers is to address the behavior in a constructive manner, rather than simply reacting to it.

Small Changes = Big Differences
|
by Stacy Menz, DPT, Board Certified Pediatric Clinical Specialist
I was just on vacation visiting my family while I recuperated and I was lucky enough to enjoy the beach for a few beautiful days. Right before I flew home, I was able to walk about a mile or so on level ground without excessive fatigue in my hip. At this point my protocol had me riding a stationary bike and using the elliptical a few days a week so my hip was getting the chance to build up some muscular endurance.
