Employment Outlooks for Policy Graduate Students
Mathematica Policy Research Offices

May 14-15, 2019
This conference unites graduate program representatives and academic and non-academic employers to review the skills being taught in graduate policy programs, discuss curricula trends and assess whether the aforementioned skills are what employers need in practice. A survey of our academic and non-academic institutional members will be conducted beforehand to help determine where students are coming from and where they are going, and to try to shed some light on the differences between APPAM member PhD programs. Data will also be collected from non-academic employers to learn more about recruitment and the valued skills of graduates.

JPAM Insights:
Effective Counter-Terrorism: Rockets,
Iron Dome
, and the Israeli Housing Market
|
How effective is counter‐terrorism and what are the underlying mechanisms? Relying on a unique experiment and detailed micro data from Israel, this study shows that the deployment of the
Iron Dome anti‐rocket system mitigated the negative effect of rocket attacks on house prices and lowered the price premium associated with in‐house shelters. Analysis of surveys and data on purchases of anti‐anxiety drugs yields evidence consistent with a psychological mechanism: by reducing the negative effects on daily routine, subjective well‐being, and psychological distress,
Iron Dome lowered the disamenity associated with living under the shadow of the rocket threat.
