Congregation Ner Tamid's Special Movie Event
"Leaving Memel - Refugees from the Reich"
Thursday, January 17 at 6:30pm

Judith Golden owned and ran a small hotel and her husband, Leo Fleischmann had a successful textile business in Memel, Lithuania. " Leaving Memel - Refugees from the Reich" tells the story of Judith Golden's family and what they experienced when the times changed and Hitler began demonizing Jews, homosexuals and Gypsies in Europe.  It's a small, personal memoir tucked inside a much larger, darker tale and has strong resonance today. It is a  story of survival and strong family bonds that make the difference between life and death.

Israel/Palestine and Or Shalom
Deepening the Dialogue with
Rabbi Amy Eilberg
Sunday, February 3, 10:00am-1:00pm

Join us for our second session with Rabbi Eilberg as we bring the deep listening skills we honed together this fall into open honest dialogue about our experience and beliefs about the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.

How do our strong feelings and opinions impact us in our families, our community, and our work for justice and peace?  What can we build together as we practice listening and speaking with respect and love, opening our minds and staying in relationship with others with whom we disagree?

Book Talk with Irene Butter:
Holocaust Survivor and Peace Activist
Sunday, February 10 at 2:00 pm

Holocaust survivor and inspirational speaker Irene Butter will be in conversation with Bay Area author and filmmaker Elizabeth Rynecki. Book signing to follow.

Dr. Irene Butter is a well-known peace activist and Professor Emerita of Public Health at the University of Michigan. Irene's first person memoir, Shores Beyond Shores, is an account of how the heart keeps its common humanity in the most inhumane and turbulent of times. Irene's memoir has been called "a revelation about what sustains the human spirit."

Day of Service with SF Marin Food Bank
Sunday, February 17 at 12:00pm
900 Pennsylvania Ave,  San Francisco

Join Or Shalom for a day of service at the SF Marin Food Bank! We will be participating on the stock room floor, helping to organize their donated food and parcel it out into manageable packages for distribution. All ages are welcome to join in this act of Tikkun Olam, including friends that are not affiliated with Or Shalom!

If you are interested in attending please contact our Social Action Fellow Ezra and let her know how many adults and children will be attending in your party. We have a limited amount of spaces reserved, so the sooner you contact Ezra, the more likely you'll get to participate. You can learn more about volunteering with SF Marin Food Bank here. We look forward to serving the community alongside you!
Or Shalom Accepts Car Donations!

Car donations are an easy way to support Or Shalom, providing you with a tax write-off and Or Shalom with additional funds for our community. We take care of the DMV paperwork, pick up your car, sell it at auction, and then send you a receipt for the full amount the car is sold for. It's that easy! We can also accept trucks, boats, motorcycles, and RVs.

For more information or to begin the process, contact Jerry Robbins at [email protected] or (650) 766-7233 and be sure to reference Or Shalom Jewish Community, San Francisco.

Thank you to Scott Falcone & Ayala Mirande for recently donating their minivan and directing the donation to the Or Shalom Building Fund.

Or Shalom's Community Domestic Violence Response Policy

Or Shalom is proud to announce that we are in the final stages of finalizing our Community Domestic Violence Response Policy! After months of collaborating with Shalom Bayit, a nonprofit focused on ending domestic violence in the Jewish community, we will soon have a way we will respond to instances of domestic violence within our membership and uphold values that promote the healing and safety of survivors.

If you have any input* about this policy (especially if you have experience with domestic violence, professionally or personally), please email our Social Action Fellow,  Ezra Leventhal

*Your input will only be shared as needed with leadership directly involved on this project; Ezra will keep your name and personal details anonymous if requested.
