Judah & the Lion

SAC Concerts is bringing Judah & the Lion to the Regents Center Saturday, May 5 at 7:30 pm. Tickets are free with CAF or $40 without. Don't miss it!

The Student Research Symposium is a full-day event held each spring to celebrate the vibrant intellectual life and learning at Luther.  Classes are suspended for the symposium, Friday, May 11, to allow all community members to participate.  The Symposium highlights the best fruits of the scholarship, research and creative activity of students from disciplines across the college. Professor Ramona Nelson will be giving the remarks at the Senior Recognition Convocation.  Her talk is titled, "Will This Be On The Exam? 

Join us to celebrate
the baptism of Menzi Nkambule and  Joseph Tiegen, Sunday, May 13, 9:30 a.m., Good Shepherd Lutheran Church, 701 Iowa Ave. We will not have Sunday morning worship on campus so that the Luther community and Good Shepherd can celebrate this special day. Joseph and Menzi are applying for candidacy to become ELCA pastors with Good Shepherd serving as their home congregation. Students can walk to Good Shepherd, or get a van ride front of CFL beginning at 9:00 a.m.

Children of War: Creating Roads to Peace -- Luther students Belal Krayem '18, Mohammed Aljadart '19, and Jam Riyan Hamza '21, each grew up in areas of the world wracked by conflict.  In this roundtable, they will share how their experiences shaped them, and discuss their hopes for their home countries.  Moderated by Kim Chham '21.  Wednesday, May 9, 7:00 p.m., Olin 102.  Refreshments following.  Sponsored by the Center for Ethics and Public Engagement.

Senior Cake Break at Preus Library : Calling all seniors! Reward yourselves with a break-a Cake Break! On Wednesday, May 9, delicious cupcakes will be available for seniors ALL DAY during staffed hours at the Research Help Desk. Tell us about your senior project in exchange for a cupcake. Sponsored by the Library.

Servant Grants - Seniors who are planning on serving as a full-time volunteer for minimal or no compensation next year may be eligible to receive a Servant Grant from Luther College's student Congregation Council for support.  If interested, please email [email protected] with a brief description of your placement and the organization you will service next year. Please reply by Sunday, May 20.

Seniors, when you graduate from Luther please be sure to delete your SPO shipping address from your online accounts like Amazon, Ebay, etc. Otherwise, your packages will be delayed when they still ship to the Luther College's Mail Center and have to be returned to the sender if we are unable to forward them onto you.

Discussing the many talents of English cleric and composer Edward Finch, Luther College Professor Emeritus of Music James Griesheimer will present a program at 3 p.m. Thursday, May 10, in the Baker Commos. The presentation is titled "Edward Finch (Polymath of England, Early 18th Century)".

RERUNS
First-year choral ensembles Norsemen and Aurora will present a concert at 7:30 p.m. Friday, May 4, in the Center for Faith and Life, Main Hall. Aurora's portion of the concert features music from around the globe. They will be joined by members of the Symphony Orchestra, pianist Anne Wilson and Nicholas Shaneyfelt. Norsemen will perform works by Franz Schubert, Sten Källman, Gwyneth Walker and George Mead. Collaborating with Norsemen is a student brass quintet coached by Rebecca Boehm Shaffer.  

Killing'ot Lembikas will present, "When Pastoralism Meets Conservation: Challenges to the Maasai Way of Life."  Sunday, May 6 at 7 p.m. in Valders 206. Lembikas has worked with Luther students and faculty as a cultural guide and interpreter for J-Term programs in Tanzania. He will explain the role of pastoralism in Maasai culture and how conservation reserves pose a challenge to the Maasai livelihood with emphasis on the violence surrounding land conflicts near his home area.
 
Lab Orchestra, sponsored by FMEA, meets for the last time this Saturday, May 5, from 1-1:30pm in the Jenson Noble Orchestra Room! Come learn a string instrument of your choice (violin, viola, cello, bass), taught by a Lab Orchestra mentor. No experience is necessary and this event is open to students of all majors. Now accepting nominations for Student Organization Awards!
Student Activities Council and Student Senate will present winners in each category with a Martin Luther Bobble Head Statue, (500 Year Reformation Special Edition.) Categories include: Outstanding Student Leader, Outstanding Student Organization, Outstanding Service Project, Outstanding Event, and Outstanding Student Organization Advisor. Nominations Due: Monday, May 7.

Saq Nadeem,  LC '98, 2013 Illinois Small Business Person of the Year and founder of Paradise 4 Paws ("P4P"), shares his views on entrepreneurship and the pet industry. P4P has been featured in the New York Times, USA Today and The Today Show. Called one of the "Coolest Businesses in America" by Business Insider, P4P has been profiled in Business Week, Chicago Tribune, and more. Saq shares his story Monday, May 7, 6:30 p.m., Olin 102.
 
The Diversity Center will have a Decorah Walmart shopping shuttle running from 2:00-5:00 p.m. Saturday, May 5.  This is open to all students and there is no charge, but reservations are requested, please register here.
