Children's Week at the State Capitol
Join thousands of Florida's families, students, teachers, and advocates at the Florida State Capitol during the week of March 24, 2019 for a celebration of our greatest gifts - our children! Now in its 24th year, Children's Week advocates for children's health, education, and well-being and is brought to you by the United Way of Florida. There are many ways to participate in Children's Week from Sunday, March 24th through Friday, March 25th, 2019.
On Sunday, March 24, 2019, there will be a ceremony to hang the hand artwork collected from thousands of children across the state in the Capitol rotunda. These hands will remain handing from the 2nd and 3rd floors for the entire week and will be taken down on Friday, March 29 as the conclusion of Children's Week. Each year, the Hanging of Hands ceremony creates an impactful display to remind legislators to take care of our children during the legislative session.
On Tuesday, March 26, 2019, Children's Capitol for a Day takes place in the State Capitol courtyard. The courtyard is transformed by hundreds of partner booths with games, activities, and entertainment including dancing, face painting, scavenger hunts, and science experiments for youth of all ages.
Storybook Village takes place during the Children's Capitol for a Day as well. Storybook Village entertains more than 2,000 young children, some of whom come dressed up as their favorite storybook characters, to enjoy interactive reading booths. Storybook Village booths bring children's books to life using storytelling, arts and crafts, character costumes, and games. This year's theme is "Rumble in the Jungle".
Children's Week at the State Capitol is a unique and engaging opportunity that shines a spotlight on the important issues facing lawmakers this legislative session. For more information, please visit

Coalition Spotlight: Advocacy for Florida's Healthy Start
Our most recent talking points for Florida's Healthy Start were released and have been highlighted below. We strongly encourage all of our Coalition members to advocate on behalf of Healthy Start. It's important that we continue to remind our Legislators of the amazing work the Healthy Start program does to help mothers and babies across the entire state of Florida. Florida's Healthy Start
Evidence-Based
- Healthy Start has strengthened its services by implementing additional evidence-based risk evaluations and intervention components for pregnant women and newborns based on recommendations of the federally-funded Maternal, Infant & Early Childhood Home Visiting (MIECHV) initiative.
Responsible Use of Resources
- Healthy Start has led efforts to increase access to services, while reducing duplication, by implementing the Coordinated Intake & Referral process and streamlining local systems of care for expectant and new families.
- To protect against duplication with managed care, Florida Statute 409.975 (4), "Managed care plan accountability" legislation came into effect in 2014. It mandates coordination between the Medicaid managed care plans and Healthy Start.
The Impact of Healthy Start

Florida has seen a
35% decrease in infant mortality rate since 1991due in part to the resources and services provided by Healthy Start. It leads with low rates in south-eastern states.
- Last year, Healthy Start provided support for nearly 80,000 at-risk pregnant women and more than 56,000 at-risk infants and helped connect them with community resources.
- Healthy Start Coalitions raise and leverage other valuable funds to fill gaps in resources and meet their assessed local maternal and child health needs.

2018 Marion County World's Greatest Baby Shower
The Marion Baby Shower will be held on Thursday, January 24th in the multipurpose room at the Marion County Sheriff's Office from 3:00 PM until 8:00 PM.
Alachua County World's Greatest Baby Shower
The Alachua County Baby Shower will be held on Saturday, February 23rd at Westwood Middle School from 9:00 AM until 12:00 PM.

NewboRN Home Visiting Program Update
We are pleased to introduce you to the Registered Nurses (RN) who are completing the home visits with our mothers and babies who recently delivered in Alachua County, Florida through the NewboRN Home Visiting Program. We have two RNs from UF Health Shands HomeCare and three RNs from Nursecore.

Help Me Grow
HMGF is a comprehensive and integrated statewide system designed to identify developmental and/or behavioral concerns in children ages birth through eight (8), and link their families to community-based services and supports. The HMGF system model promotes cross-sector collaboration to build efficient and effective early childhood continuums of care. These continuums mitigate risk factors and support protective factors, so all children can reach their full potential.
HMGF is not a stand-alone program, but rather a system model that utilizes and complements mechanisms in Florida communities. Successful implementation of HMGF leverages existing resources, maximizes opportunities, and advances stakeholder collaborations toward achieving a mutual agenda.
Four (4) cooperative and interdependent Core Components characterize the HMGF system model:
- A Centralized Access Point that provides developmental screening, information, referrals, and care coordination to connect children, their families, and professionals with appropriate community-based programs and services;
- Family and Community Outreach that provides child development education and raises awareness of the HMGF system and services;
- Child Health Care Provider Outreach that promotes early detection and intervention, and integrates medical care into the system; and
- Ongoing Data Collection and Analysis that evaluates services and outcomes; identifies systemic barriers and gaps; bolsters advocacy efforts; and guides continuous quality improvement.
The Early Learning Coalition of Marion County is the lead agency for the program in Marion County and has contracted with Healthy Start of North Central Florida to conduct the Child Health Care Provider Outreach piece of the program. We are very excited about this partnership and look forward to the positive impact we will have together on children ages birth through eight (8)!

Happy New Year!
I hope you had a wonderful Holiday season with those you love and were able to make some amazing new memories!
Mr. Jack Levine, Founder of 4Generations Institute, was our guest speaker at our December Board meeting and did a wonderful job encouraging and motivating us as we enter this new year! Sometimes we get lost in the busyness that we lose sight as to why we do what we do. Why we go to the hundreds of meetings, write and reply to the thousands of emails, return phone calls, create contracts and budgets, etc. At the end of the day, we do all of these things to help others and to make a difference in the lives of those living within our communities. Not everyone can say that they helped people as their lives work but we can! My goal this year is to reflect on the "why" I do what I do and that's to help our mothers, babies and families with children have a Healthy Start
in life!
