May 2018 - In This Issue:
President's Message

As we are putting the final logistics together for what will no doubt be an amazing  MO HR Day of Service on May 4th , I can't help but think about all the various opportunities we have to volunteer and to give back on a regular basis.  Giving back doesn't always have to be a big event. For me personally, I have found that the time I have spent through volunteering on the SHRM-KC Board of Directors to be incredibly rewarding and a great way to use my skills and talents to give back. I'm not so great with a hammer so those projects aren't always for me!

I joined the SHRM-KC Board of Directors in 2014, after being an active committee member on the membership committee for a couple of years. I was certainly honored to have been approached and asked if I would have any interest in joining the board, but I was also nervous. I had never served on a board; what did that entail? How much time would that take? Was I experienced enough to add value? What was I supposed to be bringing to the table?

As a board member, our role is really to look out for what is best for the chapter and our members. As we assess programming, budgeting, policies, procedures, etc. we are tasked with ensuring we are meeting the needs of our members, the goals of the organization and keeping the organization healthy and in good standing.  I have learned things as a board member that I would not have had an opportunity to learn in my day to day role at work and have probably grown more overall as a professional through my time as a board member than I did in the last 5 years in my job, simply because I'm exposed to very different challenges. Of course we have a lot of fun and the relationships I've developed have been priceless; not only with the other board members, but with our members, speakers, partners and vendors. The time commitment varies depending on what's going on and what role someone has on the board, but aside from our SHRM-KC events, the board meets once a month and each Director typically has a committee that meets once a month. I have found it to be more than worth the time I have put in for all that I have gained while giving back to my HR community.

If you are interested in learning more about applying to become a SHRM-KC Board member, please let me know, I'd be happy to talk to you more about it and the process. We will be asking for those that are interested to apply over the next few months.

Thanks!

Inclusion in Pay - What message are our pay practices sending?
The words diversity and inclusion can mean a lot of different things depending upon the audience. This past month we had Equal Pay Day on April 10th which got me thinking of compensations role in workplace inclusion. Can we claim a diverse and inclusive workforce if our pay structures reflect biases, even if they are defensible?
At times it may feel as if we are belaboring the point. You may feel like, everyone knows there is a gender pay gap and we are tired of hearing about it, but studies show 49% of men and 17% of women believe the pay gap to be a thing of the past.  READ MORE
What's Everyone Talking about? Diversity & Inclusion Discussion Topics for May 2018
We all know there are many things to talk about when it comes to Diversity and Inclusion. Below are a few suggestions and a link to specific days celebrated in May to bring up at your next meeting.

May 2018
  • May is Asian-American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month in the United States. The month of May was chosen to commemorate the immigration of the first Japanese to the United States on May 7, 1843, and to mark the anniversary of the completion of the transcontinental railroad on May 10, 1869. The majority of the workers who laid the tracks on the project were Chinese immigrants.
  • May is also Older Americans Month, established in 1963 to honor the legacies and contributions of older Americans and to support them as they enter their next stage of life.
  • In addition, May is Jewish American Heritage Month, which recognizes the diverse contributions of the Jewish people to American culture.
If you're interested in joining the SHRM KC Diversity and Inclusion Committee,
