Mental Health First Aid - Adults Who Interact with Youth Course

The Course:
Chinook Council is proud to host the first Scout-oriented Mental Health First Aid (MHFA) training course for our Scouters. This training is critical as Scouters are often Trusted Adults in the lives of youth. A youth with a Trusted Adult in their lives is far less likely to engage in unhealthy behaviours and attitudes. MHFA training gives Scouters the confidence and skills to help youth in need.

Mental Health First Aid is a training course designed to give members of the public the skills to help someone who is developing a mental health problem or experiencing a mental health crisis. The evidence behind the program demonstrates that it builds mental health literacy, decreases stigmatizing attitudes, and helps individuals identify, understand, and respond to signs of mental illness.

Mental health problems begin sooner than you think. Mental Health First Aid for Adults who Interact with Youth focuses on the basics, and more specifically on mental health problems and first aid for young persons aged 9-24.

AIMS OF THE 14 HOUR COURSE
  • Recognize the symptoms of mental health problems or crises as they develop in youth, including eating disorders and non-suicidal self-injury.
  • Provide initial help when facing a mental health problem or crisis.
  • Guide youth and/or adults who support them toward appropriate professional help.
  • Learn how to accommodate young people who are in distress or are recovering from a crisis.
The course covers 6 areas:
  1. Mental health problems and stigma
  2. Substance-related disorders
  3. Mood-related disorders - depression, suicide, self-injury, and more
  4. Anxiety and trauma-related disorders - anxiety and panic attacks, and more
  5. Eating disorders
  6. Psychotic disorders
Participants who take this course are well prepared to interact confidently about mental health with the young people in their lives, including at schools, extra-curricular activities, social services, family, friends, and communities.
