"How to Buy or Sell a Business" workshop set for Jan. 31
Michigan Main Street, in partnership with the Small Business Development Center, is presenting a "How to Buy or Sell a Business" workshop on Thursday, January 31 at Boyne City Hall. The workshop will be held from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. with registration beginning at 8:30. Workshop details and registration are online Pre-registration is preferred; however, walk-ins will be welcomed.
The buying and selling of a small business are among the most important and too often overlooked topics an entrepreneur will face during the lifespan of a business. Buying an existing business is one of the best ways to obtain small business ownership and while many aging small business owners are eager to retire; many are looking to sell. It's been estimated that only 5% of attempted business sale transactions are successful and this conference is targeting the small business owners least likely to have the resources or be adequately positioned to successfully complete these lengthy and difficult transactions. This conference is presented by a team of experts and concludes with a panel discussion allowing sufficient time for networking with the speakers and presenters that include MI-SBDC specialists, small business owners, accountants, lenders, and attorneys.

BC schools closed for rest of this week because of illnesses
Patrick Little
Supt. Patrick Little
From the Petoskey News-Review: After a second consecutive day in which roughly half of Boyne City Public Schools' elementary students were absent because of illness - and with nearly a quarter of the district's overall student population out of school - district officials have decided to cancel classes and all school-related activities for the remainder of this week. Supt. Patrick Little said,
"Reportedly the cause of many illnesses is Influenza A. The health care professionals working with the district recommended that a 72-hour closure of school would be the most prudent plan so the virus could become more fully extinct in the students and possibly slowing the pace of illness for the community-at-large."  Full story.

When it comes to business strategies and opportunities, certain companies and businesses in the area also set themselves apart from the competition, said Northern Lakes Economic Alliance president Andy Hayes, who oversees a public/private nonprofit organization focusing on job retention and creation in Antrim, Charlevoix, Cheboygan and Emmet counties. BC Lanes will host a fundraiser for the family of Mitchell Gasco from 4-7 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 27. On November 14th, the Gasco and Hall-Peck Families received the worst news imaginable. On December 28, he began his new journey at Mary Free Bed for his long-term rehabilitation and recovery. It is uncertain how long he will be there, but his family will remain by his side as they have since the accident. Anticipating a long road to recovery, his family could use some help covering expenses with the loss of wages so they can continue to support Mitchell on this journey. There will be 50/50 raffle, auction and a silent auction, live music from The Lopers and food by donation. All money will be donated directly to Mitchell's family. Facebook event.

Eta Nu
Lights of Love Committee members gather after the lighting ceremony, celebrating with an evening of food and fellowship. From left are Connie Tenkel, Kathy Henricks, Suzanne Snyder, Pati Scott, Marnie Parrott, Jeanne Marriott, Sharon Kemp, Candy Greene.
Boyne Eta Nu Charities, a community-focused organization that contributes resources to the Boyne City area through service projects and fundraisers, held their Annual Lights of Love tree lighting ceremony in December. This has been an annual event since 1987. The poignant celebration is held each year to honor and commemorate the lives of those who have been lost or who are simply not near during the holiday season. Each year the effort raises funds for the Hospice of Northwest Michigan, providing funds to be used for unmet needs that may transpire in a difficult time for families. Eta Nu and Hospice of Northwest Michigan would like to thank everyone who purchased hearts and tree lights as well as the sponsors who contributed materials or services for this year's event. Sponsors included Bob Grove and the Dilworth Hotel, who hosted the tree; Hailey Drost, who donated the tree; Miller Poineau & Naumes INC, provided the wood hearts; Industrial Magnetics Inc., who provided the printing; Val and Larry Glasgow, owners of Water Street Café; and Sydney Wormel from Upsy-Daisy Floral and Kimberly Pappas from The Brook Retirement  Communities, who provided beautiful flower arrangements. This year there were 41 personalized hearts and 127 memorial tree lights bought to help make this another incredible event. In the past 31 years, over $100,000 has been raised and donated to Hospice of Northwest Michigan through these efforts. At an Eta Nu chapter meeting on January 14, Pati Scott, Lights of Love Committee Chairwoman, presented Jeanne Marriott, Executive Director of Hospice of Northwest Michigan, with a check for $4,355 - the entire amount received from the efforts. Full press release.

2nd Annual Fat and Flurrious bike race Saturday at Avalanche
It's back! The Fat & Flurrious is the Lower Peninsula's most challenging fat bike race. Test yourself and race your buddies to see who can make it around the groomed trails at Avalanche Mountain the fastest.
The course will change this year (since last year was scorching fast and had textbook race conditions). The final course map will be released one week prior to the event and will be condition-dependent. For example, if the snow is firm and fast (like last year), the course will be longer, and vice versa. It will be a mixture of groomed singletrack and two-track. Check out the video and map from last year to get an idea of the course.
> The After Party will again be held at Stiggs Brewery & Kitchen, and this is also their second anniversary party. Awards will be held outside and good food and libations will be available.
All event proceeds will be donated to the Top Of Michigan Mountain Bike Association, which is currently fundraising to build 8 more miles of trails at Boyne School Forest Trail. Your winter event participation goes directly towards building more trails next the summer. www.fatandflurrious.com

Lake Street Pub Lake Street Pub: Uptown hometown food, sports, billiards, and beer. Oh, and kid-friendly too
From the Northern Express: Boyne City is a restaurant town, and breaking into an established market might seem daunting, but after eight short months, Lake Street Pub already has a feeling of permanence. Opening in late May 2018, LSP began operations with everything in place: contemporary ambiance, professional wait staff, crave-inducing menu, a convivial bar, and entertainments for every age. "The word is starting to spread, and our patronage is only growing," says general manager Jessica Mulvaney.
A Look Inside: In a freshly renovated building, part of a larger project that replaced a block of tired, underused storefronts, Lake Street Pub pays homage to industrial style: clean lines, natural brick and wood, generous windows, and an open ceiling with exposed trusses and ductwork. Full story by Geri Dietze.
