Dear St. George Families,

I wanted to give you a brief update on our progress in regards to campus safety for our students, staff, parents and parishioners.

Recently our parish and school have been working with retired Chief of Police Jeff LeDuff. Chief LeDuff has been on campus a number of times at all hours of the day and night doing a physical assessment of our campus. In his report which he delivered to us last week, he shared a great deal of data and information with us regarding our campus including, crime data for Baton Rouge and the neighborhoods that surround our campus. He was very impressed by our facilities and the procedures and protocols that we currently have in place to secure our campus. One noteworthy item that he mentioned was whenever he was on our campus not wearing a visitor badge he was immediately stopped, questioned and redirected to the office for a visitor badge. Chief LeDuff also has made some recommendations for enhanced safety measures for St. George and is helping us prioritize his recommendations. Our work with Chief LeDuff is ongoing.

As you may have noticed recently, we have added some additional fencing near the front office and St. George Hall. During the summer months a gate with an electronic lock will be installed. All visitors and guests will have to be "buzzed in" from the front office. Also, additional fencing and a gate will be added along the fence by the football field to close off this area.

Our new Pre-K building will be equipped with an access control system as well as a number of cameras to monitor both inside and outside the building. Once the Pre-K building gets closer to completion we will work with the architects to include additional fencing to further enclose our campus and Pre-K building.

We are working closely with St. George Parish to provide an integrated approach to campus safety. We are planning and moving forward on additional items to further safeguard our school and parish. I hope to be able to update you again very soon. Safety is a top priority for our Parish and School and we strive to be the leaders in Baton Rouge. Please do not hesitate to contact me if you have any questions.

God bless,

Jack Nelson
