Alumni Update
Sheree Goins-Esquivel and her family.

Sheree Goins-Esquivel - Cohort 12
Director of Business Development, Valley Hospital Medical Center - Valley Health System

"Without my UNLV Executive MBA, I may have simply stayed in my lane," said Sheree Goins (Cohort 12), director of business development with Valley Health System's Valley Hospital Medical Center. "The EMBA experience gave me the confidence to not only seize new opportunities, but to create them. An advanced degree from UNLV differentiated me from colleagues opening doors that once were closed."

Change has come fast for Goins since she stepped away from her 15-year hospitality career with MGM Resorts International. Nine months after her 2014 graduation from the UNLV EMBA program, Goins changed both jobs and industries.

When Goins began her EMBA, she was very happy at MGM having held numerous front-desk management roles. "At the time I thought I would be in hospitality forever," said Goins.

With an added sense of self-assurance gained from the early days of her EMBA experience, Goins began further satisfying her quest for new knowledge. "I started seeking out senior MGM executives in departments outside my own to ask why and how business decisions were being made. When I explained that I was pursuing my EMBA, they were more than happy to spend time walking me through the processes and reasoning." During the EMBA program, Goins was promoted to an MGM corporate-level position as senior learning consultant.

But further change was brewing as Goins progressed through the EMBA program. "My fellow cohort members, and the program overall, broadened my thought-processes in terms of what is out there. I began to re-evaluate staying in hospitality. I no longer wanted to be limited in my career choices."

With plans for career change yet to be clearly formulated, fate and a fellow EMBA cohort member intervened. Almost nine months after receiving her EMBA, Goins received a call from a fellow alumni about a physician relationship manager position with Valley Health System's Centennial Hills Hospital Medical Center.

"I didn't have a background in healthcare, but it's about being ready for an opportunity," she said. "That preparedness really came out of my experience in the UNLV EMBA program." Goins accepted the position, relishing her role in an unfamiliar industry. In mid-2018, she was promoted to her current position.

Assistant Professor
EMBA 717 - Negotiations and Conflict Resolution

John Baur, Ph.D.
UNLV Assistant Professor John Baur, Ph.D., wastes no time during his EMBA Negotiations and Conflict Resolution course empowering EMBA students with effective strategies to take control of the negotiation game and win it!

Using the professional sophistication of EMBA students to enhance the experiential nature of his teaching style, Baur bridges the gap between theory and practice.

"Negotiation is a refined skill that can be learned and practiced," said Baur. And, cognizant of the time restraints facing most UNLV EMBA students, he makes the most of classroom activities that help cohort members develop and hone their individual negotiation styles.

"It's exciting to teach EMBA students," said Baur. "They want real-world relevance and applicability - concepts that they can immediately apply to their work. They're able to see the synergy between their work experience and what they learn in the classroom."

Baur guides EMBA students through a series of simulations and role-playing scenarios that become increasingly more complex. "By the time students reach the final scenario, they are dealing with multiple variables, where several parties are working to come to an agreement."

In addition to the interactive exercises, the Negotiations and Conflict Resolution course provides an opportunity for cohort members to meet for feedback and explore potential techniques that may have been overlooked.

Alumni, and even a future Cohort 18 member, enjoy the Cohort 16 Graduation Dinner festivities.

Alumni representing past cohorts and EMBA faculty showed their support by attending the Cohort 16 Graduation Dinner in early January.

For several Cohort 15 members such as Michael Speagle, Andrew Kerzmann, Steven Worley and Scott Petsel, the Cohort 16 Graduation Dinner served as a mini reunion and a great opportunity to catch up with fellow cohort alumni.
