40 Years Old and 40 Years Strong
In the fall of 1978 the Academy of Scholastic Achievement began its journey to provide education to the youth on the West Side of Chicago. With much gratitude, ASA thanks all of our students, alumni, parents, teachers, support staff, funders and supporters of all kinds for their encouragement over the past 40 years.
We marked our anniversary in May with a gala celebration. (Pictured above, from left to right: Chris McDonald, alumni and awardee at the event; Dr. Nicole Simpson, ASA principal; T.C. McCoy, ASA board member; seated is Gladys Simpson, founder and executive director.)

Congratulations ASA Class of 2018!
Sixty-two graduates of ASA tossed hands and hats into the air after sharing their day of triumph and celebration with family and friends on June 13 at New Zion Church.
The graduating class of 2018 heard congratulations and inspirational words from the speaker, Barbara Bates, a fellow west sider and well-known fashion designer. Bates of Barbara Bates Designs spoke from her experience as a young teen mother who went on to achieve a successful career. Bates encouraged graduates to pursue their own dreams in life.

SOLAR POWER COMES TO ASA
Solar panels now sit atop the roof of the science lab, the results of a grant from the Illinois Clean Energy Community Foundation. The solar panel system will reduce the cost of energy usage at ASA and provide hands-on applications to our science curriculum. ASA will use the high school curriculum developed by the National Renewable Energy Laboratory, which ranges from the study of the history of solar cells to exploration of how solar cells convert light to energy. With the solar heating system, our students will actually be able to witness the conversion of solar energy to electric power. ASA is planning a Solar Celebration, inviting students and representatives from other schools and local nonprofit organizations to demonstrate the promise of solar energy to reduce energy usage and expense.
