WORD for the Week for January 20, 2019
Second Sunday After the Epiphany

COME & WORSHIP
Sabbath Beginnings - Sacred Journey - Traditional Worship
WORD for Sabbath Beginnings 8am
Scripture Text: Ezekiel 18:25-32 (NRSV)

Worship Leader: Rev. Dwight Haberman

Holy Communion :  Have we lost the word Repentance from our Christian vocabulary?  Are we sorrowful when we fail in the ways of God?
In addition to the Ezekiel passage an additional overarching scripture regarding the energy that binds people together is Zachariah 4:6-7 . “This is the word of the Lord to Zerubbabel: Not might, nor power, but by my spirit says the Lord of hosts. What are you , O  great mountain? Before Zerubbabel you shall become a plain: and he shall bring out the top stone amid shouts of  Grace, grace to it. “  (not by power, nor might, but by Grace..)

WORD for Sacred Journey 8:30am

The Story: Joe Kreisman

Reflection:   This week in Sacred Journey, Joe Kreisman, Director of Downtown Congregations to End Homelessness, stops by to visit, to share his vision and work of building “the beloved community” for our brothers and sisters who find themselves outside our systems and outside our doors. As people of faith, it's important to ask, can we provide spiritual and physical safe space to speak about the challenges and hope of community building? Can we weave a narrative of community that helps others connect the dots of these issues? Can we speak a cosmological language that creates a home for those who are spiritually homeless, even if they are well-off? If we can, then we will be one step closer to realizing Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s compelling vision. Story and song, image and prayer, silence and sharing...all are welcome to join in the journey!

WORD for Traditional Worship 10am

Preaching:  Rev. Judy Zabel

Sabbath to End Homelessness

Building Bridges: Dismantling Racism

The Meaning of Repentance and the Beloved Community

Reflection: We live in a complicated world that tends to divide people into camps. How will we love one another if we are unwilling to stop, listen, open our hearts and minds to allow God to change us? Being the Beloved Community is all about changing minds and hearts so that we can love each other better. When people are homeless, we may think it is a political problem to be solved by someone else. But Christians are called to show the world how to live in the beloved community by watching out for each other. Read Ezekiel 18:30-32 and 1 John 3:11-24 to prepare yourself to hear a new word about a cure for what ails our world and our souls. Come prepared to worship God who loves deeply and leave uplifted and filled with hope.

For the Children and the Adults in Their Lives: In the Bible, the people Jesus chose to follow him are called "disciples." They learned his ways so they could live them out and teach others. In a way, they were his "team." He chose them because he loved them and believed they could do great things. It's the same with all people: Jesus loves all and believes we can do great things. We can all be on this team! Who has Jesus put in your life whom believes in you? What great things are you capable of? What great things go better with people on your team?
