A Message From the Director
Greetings!
I hope your year is off to a fantastic start and that you have much to look forward to in 2019!
As I step into my first month as the Director, I am struck by the wonderful community we have in Kansas SHRM - collectively, we have an amazing amount of talent and experience. We are also so fortunate to have dedicated and supportive volunteer leaders - both here on the State Council and across the state in each of your Chapters. As a long-time member and volunteer leader myself, I've always known that, but in this new role I feel especially aware and thankful for all that you do to support our great organization, professionals and profession.
We kicked off the year with our annual Leadership Academy, held this year in Manhattan. Over 60 volunteer leaders attended this day and a half event designed to professionally develop and train our incoming Chapter and State Council leaders. Here are a few highlights:
- We took a risk and invested in bringing in an outstanding speaker from VitalSmarts to teach us about Crucial Conversations - she was excellent and I think every attendee left with insights and strategies for approaching tough conversations - whether at work, in our communities or at home.
- We also leveraged our proximity to K-State and invited a professor to teach us about Civic Professionalism and the importance of community engagement.
- Our Field Services Director from SHRM, Scott Ferrin, attended as well and provided attendees with critical training for managing through change and the resources available from SHRM.
Presentations and resources from the Leadership Academy are available, please reach out to your Chapter President for more information. Thank you to everyone that helped us create and put on this event - and thank you to our attendees for your engagement throughout the Academy!
We have a lot of exciting plans for 2019! I hope you are planning to join us in Topeka next month for our annual Employment Law and Employee Benefits Conference, which includes a Day on the Hill - a wonderful opportunity to meet legislators and see how things work at the Capitol. Registration is still open and available from our website,
www.ksshrm.org
.
We are also already gearing up for our annual Kansas SHRM State Conference! Please mark your calendars for September 11-13, 2019 and join us in Overland Park for this amazing event, "Back to the HR Future!" I love going to the State Conference! It is such a great way to network with other HR professionals across the state and get information I need to do my job better. On top of that, we already have an awesome lineup of keynote speakers! Be sure to watch your inbox for announcements related to this year's conference and sign up before the Early Bird rate expires on April 30.
Once again, I would like to thank you all for your involvement in Kansas SHRM, either through your local Chapter or as an at-large SHRM member!
I hope to see you at one of our upcoming events!

SHRM-SCP, SPHR

Congratulations Kansas SHRM State Council for receiving the Platinum Excel Award from SHRM for 2017!

Diversity and Inclusion Champion Award
Kansas State Council of SHRM is seeking nominations for our Diversity and Inclusion Champion Award!
The Kansas State Council of SHRM will recognize a Kansas SHRM Chapter member's organization (not an individual) of those that are members of Kansas SHRM chapters that model, encourage and promote diversity and inclusion in the community and/or the workplace.
KS State Council of SHRM Diversity Director Lisa Carlton encourages individuals to take the opportunity to nominate their most commendable diversity and inclusion champions for this award.
The deadline is Friday, August 9th by 5:00 p.m.,and the nomination form can be found on the Kansas SHRM website by clicking here.
Nominees are expected to have demonstrated:
- Work in the area of diversity and inclusion that goes above and beyond what is expected through normal job or organizational responsibilities.
- Efforts that have resulted in a positive impact on others in the community and the workplace.
Lisa Carlton, Kansas SHRM Diversity Director says "Kansas State Council of SHRM knows that there are many deserving organizations in our state. Whether they've started a diversity and inclusion initiative, diversity committee, or volunteered to serve or assist the community to enhance diversity and inclusion, this is an opportunity to recognize an organization in our state and their efforts."
The Kansas State Council of SHRM will select the Diversity and Inclusion Champion, who will be recognized during the Kansas SHRM State Conference held September 11-13, 2019 in Overland Park, Kansas.
The recipient organization will receive a Diversity and Inclusion Champion certificate, and a donation will be made to a charity of their choice.

SHRM Advocacy Team (A-Team)
226 people signed up to join the A-Team at the state conference, which was more than 50% of participants! The A-Team is a group of people who said they want to be notified via email when there is proposed legislation that affects the HR community. The email notification they receive explains the proposed legislation (whether national or KS state level) and explains SHRM's position on the legislation. It also provides a template for an email to the individual's specific legislator and their contact info if the recipient would like to let their legislator know their thoughts.
The A-Team isn't about being political and you don't have to agree with all of SHRM's positions. It's about being informed and using our voices to help educate our legislators when needed and shape policy that makes sense for the workplace BEFORE it becomes a law. If you missed the sign up at the conference, you can sign up online

2019 Annual Conference
Keynotes Announced
Finding and securing speakers for the Annual Conference is one of the Conference Committee's most important duties. Industry experts that will educate, inspire, and provide new and fresh tools that our members can adopt in their work is the goal; and we believe we've hit that mark exceptionally in 2019.
This year's Pre-Conference and Opening keynote speaker on Wednesday is
Risha Grant. Risha Grant is diversity personified. From her race, gender and lifestyle choices, to being a young, small business owner and tackling economic issues, every area of her life intersects diversity.
Her interest in societal isms like racism, sexism, ageism, classism and plain old stupidism began when she was very young, instead of playing outside, she was inside "playing" school - or more accurately - learning to count, read and write, just in case her darker skin tone cheated her out of an equal education. Risha would later learn how experiences like these would feed into her biases and with that realization, Risha planned to change the world, starting with the reddest state in the nation.
Today, Risha is the Founder & CEO of Risha Grant LLC, an award-winning diversity consulting and communications firm. Their mission is to utilize diversity communication strategies, tactics and training as a catalyst to create an inclusive culture in every company and community. Additionally, Risha created DiversityConneX.com, a highly successful online recruitment tool utilized by both small organizations and Fortune 500 companies to connect diverse professionals to their career opportunities, internships, and non-profit and corporate board positions.
As an international speaker, Risha uses passion, knowledge and humor to empower attendees to increase their bottom line by giving them tools to get rid of their B.S. The engaging approach of her consulting and training has helped governors, NBA teams, mayors, Fortune 500 companies, non-profit organizations and companies to reduce bias and further the understanding of Diversity & Inclusion.

2019 Student Summit & HR Games
On April 12th and April 13th, KS SHRM will host its second annual Student Summit and HR Games at Fort Hays State University. This program brings human resource college students together from across the state to compete in a jeopardy style competition of human resource knowledge for growth and professional development. The conference will also provide students opportunities for networking and mentoring with human resource and academic professionals one-on-one.
Last year we had approximately 35 students and 7 teams that competed in the HR Games, which tested their understanding of the basic body of HR knowledge and helped prepare them to pursue professional certification. KU placed 2nd behind Wichita State, in the single elimination style tournament. We also had great feedback on the educational sessions and connection opportunities with professional members.
With such a great success in our first year, we are looking forward to seeing it continue to grow! Please keep an eye on your inboxes for more details and opportunities to participate as we progress in our planning efforts.
