Message from the Commodore
James Gubelmann

Dear 12mR Friends,

With the 2018 sailing season behind us, we are now in the most critical planning phase of our 4-1/2 year effort in support of the 12mR Class and the 2019 World Championship in Newport. The Road to the Worlds series has been closely contested in both the American and European fleets. We look forward to engraving the first Waypoints winner on the antique perpetual trophy (with an interesting local provenance) that we have acquired to commemorate and display in our 12MYC Clubroom at the Clarke Cooke House. Although the model is of the yacht America, we chose it as a reminder of the early years of international yachting competition when boats were required to arrive at the racecourse on their own bottom, whether it traversed a bay or an entire ocean to get there!

Read on for a wrap-up of our 2018 season and updates on the many plans in progress for the 2019 12 Metre World Championship, now just 248 days away!

Sincerely,
James Gubelmann

Introducing the 12mR WAYPOINTS Perpetual Trophy
Waypoints Trophy

An excellent silverplate model of the famous schooner America, it is unique in that the yacht is complete even below the trophy's water line and comes apart from its silver and mahogany base made to look like waves on an active sea. The model bears
America's famous eagle carving on the stern along with great on deck details such as the yacht's tiller arm and capstan.

The maker's mark PAIRPOINT is stamped onto the keel, visible when the model is removed from its base. Pairpoint Manufacturing Company was founded in 1880 by Thomas J. Pairpoint in New Bedford, Massachusetts. It soon joined with the glassworks nearby and made glass, silver-plated pieces, and lamps. Still in business today, Pairpoint is America's oldest glass company. Pairpoint pieces are in the collections of more than 30 museums including the Smithsonian, the New Bedford Whaling Museum and the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston.

AMERICAS FLEET UPDATE: by Peter Gerard
Peter Gerard With a little over 8 months to go, the Ida Lewis Yacht Club, ITMA, the Americas Fleet and the 12 Metre Yacht Club are gearing up for the largest-ever gathering of 12 Metre Yachts in the United States at the 2019 12 Metre World Championship.

Scheduled for July 8-13, Ida Lewis Yacht Club will host the racing from Tuesday, July 9th through Saturday, July 13th in Rhode Island Sound and Narragansett Bay.

We are currently anticipating 24 iconic racing yachts from 6 countries including 8 Grand Prix (1987, winged keel) 7 Modern (1967-1983), 5 Traditional (1958-1966) and 4 Vintage (1907-1958). This prestigious fleet represents 7 America's Cup wins. In recent news, we have received confirmation that the defending 12mR World Champion (Barcelona 2014) Patricio Bertelli's Nyala, will be in Newport next summer to defend her title! We have also lately learned that KZ-5 will be chartered for the Worlds by 3-time Olympic medalist Jesper Bank.

part 3:

Renewed Interest
Olin Stephens once wanted to be a good painter, and studied under Heliker and Kuniyoshi. But he lacks the conventional "artistic" appearance. With brown suit, bow tie, glasses, a quiet, efficient manner, he might be a foreign service career officer, or a scholar of the medieval history he enjoys reading. Running the world's largest yacht design firm ties him down to his office on lower Madison Ave. most of the time. What leisure he has is spent on his farm in Sheffield, Mass. And he doesn't own a boat.

But Stephens regards any view of himself as disinterested in boats as either exaggerated or somewhat out of date. "There was a time, during the war, after it, and through the Korean affair when we did a lot of Navy work. I was busy running the office, keeping men employed, doing stacks of paperwork and I didn't have much time for yacht design. But then all that slacked off, and the America's Cup matches were revived. The commission to design Columbia sparked my interest again. When Mr. Gubelmann asked me if I would design a new Twelve, naturally, I said yes." Stephens is not the man to point out that he is the most logical choice to design a boat for a new America's Cup defense, and that on that assumption he had already been doodling with and pondering the design. Once commissioned, he spent three involved months with "the tank." Stephens was the first yacht designer to tank-test hull models.

Stephens Institute
He helped Dr. Kenneth Davidson develop the research facilities at Stevens Institute of Technology in Hoboken, which are the best in the world, and indeed his identification with the place and the similarity of the names is such that foreign journals occasionally describe his boats as designed by the Stephens Institute. There, six-foot-long models costing $1200 each are put through various tests to determine resistance, lateral force, and leeway angle. The trials are also a test of accuracy; before the 1958 series, the Davidson lab found that dust collecting on models overnight could cause a one percent error in model resistance. For this series David Boyd, the British designer has also used the Hoboken tank, so the advantage has not been all Olin Stephens's.

The Cup rules are being tightened, however, and after this year all design work including tank-testing will have to be done in the challenging country.* England by then will have an adequate take of its own. Any other country, such as Australia and Italy, will be seriously handicapped, since they have no such facilities. Stephens is worried about this. He says: "I used to think Twelve-Metre design was just a matter of refining what we already knew. The rule is very tight. But I'm beginning to think there are areas in which breakthroughs can be made. The tank has made this knowledge possible- it has shown, I think, that the V-sectioned keel is an advantage, and it should be able to show us a lot more.

Sail Spars Design
First Aluminum 12 Metres, 1974
by Stephen Lirakis, 12MYC Historian
Courageous and Mariner were built beginning in the fall of 1973; both in aluminum. I lofted and built Courageous designed by Olin Stephens. During that time I was also taking a course in tank testing at Stevens Institute taught by Peter Desaix, who was responsible for the towing tank.

Mariner

Peter would begin each class rubbing his hands together as he announced "Brit Chance has a breakthrough, but I can't tell you what it is."

Ted Turner_ 1974
Ted wondering where it all went wrong in 1974
Mariner

The disaster that was Mariner is still a famous moment in the history of the America's Cup. Many years later Peter Desaix confessed that there was an error in the results from the tank. However the damage was done. Brit Chance's reputation was nearly destroyed. Anyone who knew Brit, would acknowledge that he was very bright. It would follow that he would never have pursued the line of thinking presented by empirical data provided by the tank had the full truth been known.

Ted Turner was Mariner's skipper and 1974 was a bitter pill and proved to be pivotal in his decision to sail Courageous in 1977. --SL
