An Update from the Historical Commission: Nine New Nominations Approved
The Historical Commission recently approved nine new additions to the Philadelphia Register of Historic Places. Among those is the Radio Church of God, nominated by the Preservation Alliance of Greater Philadelphia with Ben Leech.
The former Hamilton School building at 4105-09 Chestnut Street was designed by prolific school architect Joseph Anshutz and constructed in 1891 for use as a private primary and secondary school. Following the school's closure in 1900, the building housed the Free Library of Philadelphia's West Philadelphia Branch from 1901 to 1906. Between 1906 and 1926, the building served as the headquarters of the West Philadelphia Republican Club. Since 1940, the building has been home to the Radio Church of God, a congregation founded by the charismatic African American evangelist Elder Lightfoot Solomon Michaux (1885-1968), a nationally significant pioneer in religious radio and television broadcasting. In 1951, the Gospel Spreading Church of God, the direct descendant of Michaux's original church, obtained the building and is still occupying it today.

Balance Lost Buildings With Those Saved In 2018

annual Lost Buildings list was the basis for Paul Steinke's recent Op-Ed piece. While 400 demolition permits were approved by the city in 2018, this list aims to celebrate some of the 263 properties that were protected from demolition by being listed on the Philadelphia Register of Historic Places.

Jefferson Announces New M.S. in Historic Preservation
This year, Thomas Jefferson University's College of Architecture and the Built Environment will debut their new graduate studies program in historic preservation. What sets Jefferson's program apart is its focus on preserving modern buildings with their new Center for Modernism. Along with advocating for their newly acquired Hassrick House by Richard Neutra in 2017, the program looks to focus on Modernism in Philadelphia with relation to the rest of the international movement.

APT February Lecture Series

The Association of Philadelphia Tour Guides (APT) invites Alliance members to its annual Philadelphia history lecture series taking place Wednesday evenings in February, 6 - 9 PM at the Powel House, 244 S. 3rd St., Philadelphia. These lectures are a perfect complement to Building Philadelphia, and Alliance members can sign up at the discounted APT member rate. We are also pleased to announce that APT and the Alliance will be co-sponsoring a two-part guiding workshop at the end of Building Philadelphia. The workshop is free for those who attend the Building Philadelphia series or the APT lectures.
