"There's a sense of pride and joy when you walk across the stage after twelve years of hard work. Now, imagine coming from a low income family that immigrated from Thailand and when you walk across that stage, you're the first valedictorian ever in the family. Even better, you're the first to attend a four year university. To set an example for your younger siblings, that's more than just pride and joy, it's something special.

I am a Hmong boy, born in a refugee village on the other side of the globe, and when my family immigrated to the United States, it was hard to adjust and full of obstacles. For my siblings and I, we were placed in the educational system with a disadvantage because of our language barrier. As for my parents, they had to provide for a family of seven and with no education they endured the long hours to make ends meet. They are two of the most unselfish person ever, always putting my siblings and I first. The only thing they ask for in return, is for us to focus on our education. My parents would always remind me to get a good education so I can have a good career and perhaps I won't have to work as hard as they did. They always wanted better for us, and I know that although it could get hard sometimes, anything I'll ever do would never be as hard as what they had to do. I am pursuing a higher education not only to fulfill their wish, but because I want to give my parents the life they never dreamed of, since they were too focused on giving me the life I've always dreamt of.

Using this as motivation and my past accomplishments as confirmation, in fall of 2018 I will be attending the University of California, Los Angeles and major in Biology. I want to thank the APIASF/ Hong Kong scholarship, for believing in me and giving me this generous fund. It is without words how helpful this scholarship is to me. With the annual salary of my parents just above the line of poverty, this scholarship along with other financial support would allow my education to be manageable and not become a financial burden. This scholarship not only allowed me to reach my goals, but it gave me the opportunity to succeed and one day, I'll pay it forward. Thank you."

Thank you, United Health Foundation!
