Dear fellow M&D members,

Wish you a happy and prosperous new year, and thank you for your continued support of our division!

2018 was a productive year for our division. Highlights, some of which are described in this newsletter, include record participation in the M&D track at the 2018 IISE Annual Conference at Orlando, publication of the new Design and Manufacturing Engineering knowledge area in IISE's Industrial Engineering Body of Knowledge, revision of the division's bylaws, and new collaborative activities with other divisions, ISE Magazine and IISE Transactions journal.

Utilizing the momentum into the new year, the planning of 2019 activities is well underway! The M&D board is assisting the Program Committee with organization of the M&D track at the 2019 IISE Annual Conference (May 18-21 in Orlando, FL). The division is also continuing to sponsor the four annual awards: 1) Track Best Paper, 2) Best Student Paper, 3) Outstanding Young Investigator, and 4) Outstanding Service. The nomination deadline for the Best Student Paper Award is February 1 (paper submission due January 18). The nomination deadline for the Outstanding Young Investigator and Outstanding Service Awards is February 15. As per the revised bylaws, the division will also conduct elections for three officer positions - Secretary, Media Director, and External Relations Director - in March 2019. Nominations for these are due February 28. The call for nominations for these awards and officer positions are included in this newsletter. Please consider nominating your colleagues.

Call for Nominations - 2019 M&D Division Awards

The M&D division is seeking nominations for three annual division awards. The award categorizes and nomination deadlines are summarized below. Please review respective award websites for details.
 
M&D Best Student Paper Award
This award recognizes excellence in a paper submitted to the M&D Track at the IISE Annual Conference whose primary contributor is a student member of IISE and the M&D division. The two step nomination process entails: 1) submission of a full length conference paper to the M&D track in the conference management system by January 18, 2019, and 2) submission of the Nomination Form  by the faculty advisor to  Dr. Sanjay Joshi by February 1, 2019.  Award Website here
 
M&D Outstanding Young Investigator Award
This award recognizes M&D division members under the age of 35 (as of July 1, 2019) for their technical contributions to the field of manufacturing and design. The nomination package, as described on the award website, should be emailed to Dr. Dusan Sormaz  by February 15, 2019.  Award Website here
 
M&D Outstanding Service Award
This award recognizes M&D division members who have demonstrated leadership and made significant contributions to public and community matters related to the manufacturing engineering profession (academia or/and industry) and have been active in the IISE M&D community. The nomination package, as described on the award website, should be emailed to Dr. Lourdes Medina by February 15, 2019.  Award Website here 
Call for Nominations - 2019 M&D Board Elections


The M&D division is seeking nominations for three board officer positions described below. All three positions have two-year terms beginning at the conclusion of the 2019 IISE Annual Conference. Of the three positions, only the Secretary position has a succession plan wherein they transition into the roles of President-Elect, President, and finally, Past-President, with a two-year term in each role.
  • Secretary - This officer is responsible for managing correspondence of the division including recording and sharing records and minutes of meetings with appropriate constituents. They are also expected to discharge duties of the President-Elect in their absence. Considering the succession plan, this position requires an eight-year commitment towards the M&D board.
  • External Relations Director - This officer is responsible for preparing and disseminating the division's Newsletters (Fall, Spring, Summer) and organizing webinars on behalf of the division and in collaboration with other IISE societies and divisions.
  • Media Director - This officer is responsible for maintaining the division's social media presence (Connect, Facebook, Twitter, Linkedin) to disseminate IISE's and division's updates and state-of-the-art information in the field of manufacturing and design. They are also responsible for maintaining the division's website.
Nominees must be current non-student members of the M&D division and must agree to perform the duties of their respective offices, if elected. Upon election, all officers are expected to participate in the monthly board conference calls and actively contribute to various division initiatives and activities. They are also expected to attend the IISE Annual conference and participate in the division's Town Hall Meeting and other special events.

The completed Nomination Form  and nominee's brief CV (up to 2 pages) must be submitted to  Kathy Gamboa  by February 28, 2019. Self-nominations are allowed. The M&D nominating committee will review all nominations and shortlist up to five candidates for each position to be included on the ballot for membership vote (March 25 - April 12) based on professional accomplishments, prior service to the community, and potential for future contributions.
Meet Your Officers

Pedro Huebner, Media Director

Pedro Huebner is an assistant professor at the School of Industrial and Systems Engineering at the University of Oklahoma. He received his B.S. degree in Production Engineering from the Pontifical Catholic University of Parana, Brazil, in 2013. Shortly after, he joined the graduate program in Industrial and Systems Engineering at the Edward P. Fitts Department of Industrial and Systems Engineering, NC State, and received his en route Master in Industrial Engineering degree in 2015 and his Ph.D. degree in 2018. His prior work experiences outside of academia were in the fields of functional ERP consulting, post-sales customer support in the energy industry, and process engineering in the cosmetic manufacturing and bottling industry. As a researcher, he pursues his interest in bridging the gap between engineering and modern medicine, while investigating the applications of current manufacturing technologies in the field of Tissue Engineering and Regenerative Medicine. His latest research explores the design and fabrication of 3D printed bioresorbable implants assisting in the regeneration of musculoskeletal tissues such as the knee meniscus and osteochondral. Pedro has served as the instructor of core manufacturing and design courses at NC State and production systems course at OU. By doing so, he discovered his passion for teaching aspiring engineers. He is also interested in fishkeeping, particularly of betta fish.

Jack Feng, Advisory Committee

Jack Feng, PhD & IISE Fellow, is an Industrial Advisor to the M & D Division of IISE.  He is also a member of the Council for Industrial & Systems Engineering (CISE) representing ISE professionals holding the highest ranked positions within their respective company.  He has been the Vice President of Operational Excellence & CVG Digital at the Commercial Vehicle Group (CVG) since late 2014. In this role, he reports to the President / CEO of CVG.   Prior to this, Jack held various senior leadership positions at the corporate level, Asia Pacific regional level and the Advanced Components & Systems divisional level within Caterpillar in lean (Caterpillar Production System) & 6-Sigma, industrial engineering, and strategic HR. He was a tenured Professor of Industrial & Manufacturing Engineering at Bradley University and tenure track Assistant Professor in Industrial Engineering at Penn State.  He was the President of the IISE Central Illinois Chapter between 1999 and 2010. This chapter won the IISE Silver Chapter Award in 2007.  He also serves as the Vice Chairman of the Greater Columbus Area Chinese Chamber of Commerce, and a past member of the Editorial Board of International Journal of Production Research and Industrial Advisory Board to the Department of Industrial and Mechanical Engineering on behalf of Caterpillar at the University of Iowa.
Design and Manufacturing Engineering - A New Knowledge Area in the IE Body of Knowledge 

We are delighted to announce the inclusion of Design and Manufacturing Engineering as a new knowledge area in the Industrial Engineering Body of Knowledge (IEBoK) published by IISE. The IEBoK consisting of thirteen knowledge areas represents a repository of essential information that defines what needs to be known to achieve a mastery in the field of IE. The new knowledge area#12: Design and Manufacturing Engineering outlines twelve core topics that are concerned with the development, optimization, and standardization of methods to transform raw materials into functional products to satisfy the applications' and stakeholders' requirements in the most resource-efficient manner.

A M&D Division special committee led by Dr. Harry Pierson (University of Arkansas) and Mr. Steven Slover (Lincoln Electric) is looking at strategies that can be used by our academic and industry constituents to utilize The Body of Knowledge document in curriculum development, teaching, recruitment and training, and professional development activities. Access the IEBoK  and the Design and Manufacturing Engineering knowledge area.
Welcome to IISE Transactions - Design & Manufacturing Focus Issues' new Editorial Board

Please join us in welcoming the new Editorial Board of IISE Transactions - Design & Manufacturing Focus Issue led by the new Editor, Dr. Satish Bukkapatnam. The new Board members began their two-year appointment in August 2018. The D&M Focus Issue will now include ten departments that align with contemporary and emerging topics in manufacturing as well as the current activity portfolio of the ISE community. More information about the full editorial board and the departments can be found here.

Smart Manufacturing - Opportunities for Industrial & Systems Engineers

Introduction and Overview
It is almost impossible today as an Industrial Engineer to avoid conversations and discussions hovering around Smart Manufacturing and Industry 4.0. Whether one is active in an industrial or academic context, Smart Manufacturing seems to be omnipresent at every meeting, conference, or trade show. However, while everyone has a certain understanding and opinion about the topic, there is still some confusion around what it truly means and how it relates to the job of an industrial and systems engineer. The objective of this short article is to provide a concise overview of Smart Manufacturing, its opportunities and challenges, and ultimately argue why IEs are uniquely qualified to spearhead the charge to master the fourth industrial revolution.

First, we will put Smart Manufacturing and Industry 4.0 in a historic context. Both build on the Intelligent Manufacturing notion that predates both terms, Industry 4.0 and Smart Manufacturing. The term fourth industrial revolution (aka. Industry 4.0 or I4) was coined not too long ago, in 2011 by a German government initiative to prepare the German manufacturing industry for the digital future [1]. While the name is certainly controversial - since when are revolutions proclaimed before they actually happen? - it rapidly caught traction and is now an established terminology across the globe. It builds on the notion that after the first three major industrial revolutions, mechanization of labor, division of labor, and computerization of the shop-floor, the convergence of the physical and virtual world, in form of so-called Cyber-physical Systems (CPS) is understood to be the next major interruption of the manufacturing industry and beyond (see Fig. 1). The question remains, was manufacturing not smart, or even 'dumb' before? No, not at all!

Applying to Graduate School: The Journey of a Female Senior Undergraduate Student at UPRM

As recent as three years ago, I had no idea about what a PhD meant neither thought that I would have the possibility of pursuing one. Being a female pursuing an engineering degree was not common in my family and it requires a lot of courage and perseverance. This is an effort that I now celebrate which prepares me for the next challenge in my career.

During my undergraduate studies at the University of Puerto Rico at Mayaguez (UPRM), I had a role model, a female professor who showed a new world of possibilities. Under her guidance I fell in love with research while I learned about graduate school and what a career in academia meant. In this journey, I discovered that I enjoy presenting at conferences, writing papers and offering mentoring. It instilled in me the desire to influence the life of future generations by giving them opportunities to conduct research while encouraging then to persevere and achieve their goals.
I exposed myself to diverse experiences before undertaking a journey to pursue a PhD. For example, I worked six months in industry as a co-op completed including multiple projects, conducted research projects at UPRM, and I had two research internships at different universities during the summer.

Time passed quickly and the time to apply for graduate school arrived. Careful planning and execution were required to achieve this goal. Applying to scholarships and fellowships, GRE, completing university applications, and requesting letters of recommendation is a process that could be very overwhelming. For this reason, I provide several guides that helped me during this process.
