Spotlight on Jackson Tupper

"The great thing about sitting down with artist Jackson Tupper is that he's the guy you can have coffee with and be inspired by his vision and never-tiring work ethic. At the same time, it's possible that he reminds you of a friend you might have grown up with." This is how curator Kelly Holt describes one of the artists featured in
Artists to Watch 2019, opening tomorrow at the Spotlight Gallery.
In describing himself, Jackson says, "My characters are kind of a reflection of my insecurities in how they are so opposite of me. Where I'm skinny and anxious, my characters are plump and carefree."

Welcome Hannah Morris
Hannah Morris is a native Vermonter, an artist, a graphic designer--and a master composter. Recently she joined the Council as executive and development assistant where she will have ample opportunities to use her many skills (except maybe the master composter part).
Hannah provides support for the executive director and board of trustees. She also works with the communications team, helping to develop social media strategy, enhancing the Council's visibility, and encouraging broad participation in the arts across Vermont.
Join us in welcoming Hannah as the newest member of the Council staff!

Art Works Grants Available
The National Endowment for the Arts (NEA)'s principal project-based funding program is open. These matching grants, ranging from $10,000 to $100,000, are meant to support "public engagement with, and access to, various forms of excellent art across the nation, the creation of art that meets the highest standards of excellence, learning in the arts at all stages of life, and the integration of the arts into the fabric of community life."
The first deadline is February 14, 2019. Visit the NEA website for more information.

Arts and the Shutdown

Last week, NPR interviewed Jill Rorem, who had planned to bring her "art-obsessed" children to Washington, D.C., for "a grand tour of the city's museums." Then came the partial government shutdown.
According to the NPR story "The showdown in Washington has reverberated across a vast expanse of the U.S. arts community and beyond the country's borders. It has been felt not just by the museums and their patrons, but also by Brooklyn students, Los Angeles filmmakers, domestic nonprofits and foreign artists--even among the volcanoes of Hawaii."
