Municipalities guaranteed standing at Alberta Energy Regulator (AER) hearings

As of January 1, Alberta municipalities now have a guaranteed standing at AER hearings when development takes place in or near their boundaries and a statement of concern has been filed. 
Watch your email for the Province’s Police Act survey  

The Government of Alberta is undertaking a review of the Police Act and will be consulting with stakeholders at in-person meetings along with a survey. The survey link will be sent to AUMA members directly by the Police Act Review Team.
AGLC announces launch of much-anticipated consultation review

Alberta Gaming, Liquor and Cannabis (AGLC) will be consulting with municipalities and broader stakeholders in town halls and online surveys regarding the charitable gaming model.

The second phase of the consultation is set to begin in spring 2019.

Farm Credit Canada (FCC) AgriSpirit Fund is once again accepting applications for the AgriSpirit Fund. The program is open to municipalities with populations under 150,000, and grants can range from $5,000 to $25,000 for a variety of capital projects.

Municipal Climate Change Action Centre News
Funding now available through the Community Generation Capacity Building Program

Municipalities now have access to funding through the Municipal Climate Change Action Centre to support the pre-development of a community generation facility compliant with the new Small Scale Generation Regulation, or activities that enable the development of community generation projects.

Applications must be submitted on or before February 22, 2019.
Community Generation Roadshow 2019

The Government of Alberta is hosting a series of open houses across the province in January and February 2019 to provide more information and answer your questions about the Community Generation Program. 
The MCCAC is operated as a joint partnership between the Alberta Climate Change Office, Alberta Municipal Affairs, Energy Efficiency Alberta, the Alberta Urban Municipalities Association, and Rural Municipalities of Alberta. Visit the MCCAC website for more information on programs, resources, and grants to assist you in your energy-related projects.

The Alberta Healthy Community Symposium is taking place March 7 and 8, in Edmonton.

The Art of Leadership for Women returns to Calgary April 4, with Malala Yousafzai (Nobel Peace Prize Laureate). AUMA members who register before February 1 will receive a $100 discount per pass.

Bylaw regulating access and use of municipal rights-of-way by telecoms is unconstitutional

In a recent decision of the Alberta Court of Queen’s Bench, a municipal bylaw (the “Bylaw”) that regulates the process for access and use of municipal rights-of-way was declared to be of no force or effect in its application to telecommunication providers (“Telecoms”).

Former High River Mayor Eldon Couey passes away

AUMA extends its sincere condolences to the family, friends, and colleagues of Eldon Couey, former mayor of the Town of High River, who passed away on January 11. He was 88 years of age.

Eldon served three terms as mayor from 1989 to 1998. His commitment for serving the community was passed on to his daughter, Cathy Couey, who is currently serving on High River Town Council.
