Did You Know...

7 FOOD TIPS

to get 2019 started off for a healthier YOU!

1. As much as possible, eat food in its "natural state." (Rather than processed and packaged with sugar, salt and/or flour.)

2. When eating something with a nutritional facts label, choose items with the fewest number of ingredients to eat less processed food.

3. When eating out, ask for extra vegetables with your meal.

4. In a reusable container, stock up on nuts for quick snacks that don't go bad.

5. Ease into mindful eating. Slow down and let your body signal when you've had just the right amount of food.

6. Hydrate, hydrate, hydrate! Keep water with you wherever you go in a reusable bottle. If it helps you drink more, add herbs or fruit slices to add flavor.

7. Don't throw food away - start composting and grow your own!

I GOT CONNECTED THROUGH "CAN" AND YOU CAN, TOO!

EDITOR'S NOTE: The following was received from Tracy Smith, a Valley Center resident, who shared her personal thoughts and experiences regarding the CAN (Community Action Network) meetings sponsored by PVI. We hope you'll read her story and see what a great resource these monthly meetings are to our community!

I received a cheerful email from Brandon at Pauma/Valley Insurance inviting me to the Community Action Network, or CAN meeting. Having recently retired, I really wanted to get to know this community, so I decided to go. I attended the November meeting and arrived at 7:45 am. Walking down the stairs, I meet Brandon who was setting up tables and chairs. He was outgoing and cheerful and promised a good time with lots of information. In the back of the room were a couple of deputies and this giant of a man named Lt. Dave Something-or-other. (Schaller) The deputies, I'm happy to report, were normal size. All of them were outgoing, smiling and introducing themselves. This should be an interesting morning.

Brandon was right! What an informative, wonderful meeting! I sat next to a CAL Fire Chief, Nick Brown and a lovely goat farmer, Jane Kehr. And the meeting began. It was the day after the red flag fire warning had been called off and there was plenty of fire news. Joe Napier and Mike Shore, the Fire Chief and Fire Marshal, gave updates; Nick from CAL FIRE gave updates, the water district gave an update, the school district administrator gave an update, all personnel giving out information were direct, concise and helpful. But there was more. There was a real sense of caring, a sense of belonging to one another, a pride in the community. I relished it.

"SIXTY SECONDS OF SAFETY"
WITH VC FIRE CHIEF, JOE NAPIER

As we "went to print" our community was being hit with the beginnings of week-long rains and we were under a Flash Flood Watch issued by the National Weather Service. As usual, Valley Center Fire Chief, Joe Napier, was on top of the situation and chose "Swift Water" as the featured topic for this month's "Sixty Seconds of Safety" - our new video series.

In fact, it was raining, the wind was blowing and it was really chilly outside for the video shoot, and we appreciate Chief Napier's eagerness to get this important information out to our community.

"BEST YEAR YET" FOR TOYS FOR TOTS DONATIONS

It was PVI's pleasure to support the  Valley Center Chamber of Commerce's Toys for Tots campaign this year! In addition to being a collection center for toys, PVI also arranged for all the toys to be picked up in Valley Center by  Major  Roy Knight , CAP (of Valley Center and pictured above with  Marian Pyle Walters , Chamber Executive Director).

Major Knight delivered the toys to the Toys for Tots special event at Fallbrook Airpark on Saturday, December 15th.

It was reported this was the best year yet for donations, so thanks again, Valley Center, for your support!

(Toys for Tots is a program run by the United States Marine Corps Reserve which distributes toys to children whose parents cannot afford to buy them gifts for Christmas. The program was founded in 1947 by reservist Major Bill Hendricks.)

DECEMBER CAN MEETING CLOSED WITH A BIG BANG!

If you missed December's CAN (Community Action Network) meeting then you missed something special as the  Valley Center Community Aid Group  (the non-profit organization of the  Valley Center Real Estate Professionals ) shared information on the group (thanks,  Diane Conaway !) including its history, scholarship program and a few of the many ways they help our community members in need.

S pecial guest,  Mark Latulippe , sh ared his family's moving personal story on how our community - through the Valley Center Community Aid Group - was there for them in their time of need. He was pleased to be able to show a token of his appreciation by presenting a check to the Group to support their ongoing efforts on behalf of the community.

PVI also concluded its first annual "I'm Thankful" campaign to raise funds and awareness for the Valley Center Community Aid Group. The campaign proved very successful, and we're already looking forward to next year! Thank you to all who supported the Campaign and a special "Thanks!" to Judith & Bahram Shadzi, with Cosmic Solar, for helping us to wrap up the Campaign with a "Big Bang!"

LOCAL FAMILIES HONOR THEIR HEROES AT
"WREATHS ACROSS AMERICA" CEREMONY

December 15th was a beautiful day in Valley Center for the 2nd Annual "Wreaths Across America" ceremony at Valley Center Cemetery, sponsored by the Center of the Valley DAR.

Brandon Strausbaugh and his mother, Ann Kunde (pictured below), were one of the families who was honored to recognize their family hero.

Brandon said it was a special honor to lay a wreath on the grave of his grandfather, Van Quackenbush, to acknowledge and show their appreciation for his service to our country.

Thank you to all of those who supported and participated in this special event, especially the Center of the Valley DAR for all of their hard work, first to identify veterans buried in the cemetery, and then to honor them in this meaningful way.

COMMUNITY CONNECTS AT CHAMBER
DESPITE CLOUDS AND CHILL
Pictured (standing)--Bob Hunsaker, new Chamber President (left) and
Brandon Strausbaugh, new Chamber Vice President (right)

Although the sun was almost a no show at the Valley Center Chamber of Commerce's first "SunRiser" for 2019, members of the business community gathered outside the Chamber office on Friday, January 11th to kick off the New Year. The chilly weather failed to detract from the  warm and cozy  community spirit as attendees expressed excitement for the year ahead promoting and supporting local businesses.

PVI was pleased to sponsor the event, which also introduced the new Chamber Executive Board for 2019: Bob Hunsaker (Krueger Realty), President; Brandon Strausbaugh (PVI), Vice President (both pictured above); Kim Cucinella (Krueger Realty), Secretary; and Sam Beckett (SWI Financial Services), Treasurer.

CUSTOMER COMMENTS
(WE LOVE TO RECEIVE YOUR TESTIMONIALS & REFERRALS!)
"
I have been doing business with PVI for the last 15 years. They handle my personal, business and commercial insurance.

In the course of my mortgage business I often have the opportunity to recommend that my clients get a quote from PVI. At least once a month they save the day for my clients who weren't able to get affordable insurance from their current insurer. They are always fast, friendly and professional.

I can't say enough good things about everyone at PVI. "
