Youth Spotligh t:  Troy Rindone
Youth Redefining the Community Conversation

by Mikayla Curtis

To be youthful is to be passionate, motivated, curious, energe
tic and have a strong desire to create positive change. Troy Rindone encompasses all of these qualities and more. A junior at Battle Mountain High School, he is leaving his mark on our community and creating positive, youthful opportunities.

Imagine standing on a stage, in front of 500 people, and spending the next 15 minutes sharing something deep and personal that has shaped who you are and what your story is, and hoping that it will inspire something inside of others. Now imagine doing that at 15, 16 or 17 years old. By starting TedxYouth@Vail! two years ago, Troy has created a platform that elevates the youth voice for our community.

Community Profile: Our Community Foundation

Our Community Foundation is a relative newcomer to the Eagle County nonprofit scene. But the organization saw needs that needed to be fulfilled and jumped in to make a direct impact. The three areas OCF is involved in are reducing hunger, early childhood education and wellness.

Every single month Our Community Foundation rescues 30,000 pounds of food from the grocery stores. This is perfectly edible food but is destined to be pitched. What do they do with the food? The use every morsel in trying to alleviate the problem of hunger in our community.

Difference Maker of the Month: Lucas Rivera

by Denise Kipp, Prevention Manager

By running the Moab 240-mile race, Lucas Rivera was aiming to end the stigma that mental health and suicide invariably carry. His message was "no matter how bad it gets, yo
u are not alone." For 240 miles, he was able to put one foot in front of the other, through mental and physical anguish that was truly unbelievable. Lucas states, "The cause goes beyond just raising awareness, it's a reminder to those who are struggling that this pain is real, and you have to just take it one mile at a time."

The Moab 240 Endurance Run is a footrace through some of Utah's most stunning and challenging terrain. The route runs southwest from Moab by the Colorado River through the Canyons section and south to the Abajo Mountains and then north to the La Sal Mountains to return to Moab for the finish.

ERYC Partners with CDOT to Raise Awareness about GDL
The Colorado Department of Transportation (CDOT) has instituted its annual teen drivin
g safety campaign with a focus on Graduated Driver Licensing (GDL). The campaign's purpose is to educate teens and parents about the GDL laws in order to promote safer driving among teens.
Eagle River Youth Coalition (ERYC) is a partner in this effort, helping to educate the local community about GDL and its positive impact in reducing teen crashes and fatalities. Here are the laws that help keep our teens safe:

Law #1 - The first 6 months with a driver license, teens can't have anyone under 21 in the car. 6-12 months, there can be 1 person under 21 in the car while the teen is driving.
Law #2 - Teens cannot use their cell phones while driving.
Law #3 - Everybody's got to wear a seat belt while the teen is driving.

Eat Chat Parent: LIKE
November 7 | Eagle Valley High School | Dinner at 5:30, presentation at 6
November 8 | Battle Mountain High School | Dinner at 5:30, presentation at 6

Eagle River Youth Coalition and Vail Health bring the next seminar in the Eat Chat Parent Series with Like, a documentary film that explores our addictive tendencies towards all things technology.

It's knowing that technology is addictive - "each like is a little squirt of dopamine," and understanding that phones, apps, social media and the addictive nature, are not going away. Instead of feeling shamed or helpless over the frequent usage (2 billion people check their phones 150 times a day!), we can work together to curtail the drive and be social face to face instead of lost within our phone screens.

Panelists include Dr. Engle, a pediatrician who fields questions on technology and the impact on young brains every single day; Dr. Fishman, Jenn Girard, counselor at the Hope Center and local youth.

In order to ensure the safety of all children, an RSVP is required for childcare with the number and ages of children: [email protected]

Submit your social media questions ahead of time for our panel! We will read your question to the panel after the movie is over. Each night the panel consists of a Colorado Mountain Medical doctor, a counselor from The Hope Center and several local teenagers who are frequent social media users. Ask away! Submit your question to Carol Johnson at [email protected].

RSVP: Carol Johnson, Community Education Manager at [email protected]

Youth Master Plan: Have Your Voice Heard
November 5 | 4 - 7 p.m. | Eagle Town Hall
November 6 | 5 - 7 p.m. | Gypsum Rec Center

While it seems like there is so much for young people to do in the community, it's inevitable to find that there are gaps and areas that are duplicated. And in such a small community, every resource and dollar count. In order to create the best environment for people ages birth through 24 throughout the county, Eagle River Youth Coalition (ERYC) has spearheaded a communitywide Youth Master Plan, aligning goals and outcomes to ultimately share resources to strengthen existing efforts and fill any gaps. In others, ERYC is creating an overall plan for young people in the community... but it can't be done in isolation or alone.

Youth Master Planning sessions for all. Plan on taking 15 to 20 minutes to share your opinions and input. Everyone and every age is encouraged and invited to attend.
