Ropes, Reins, Joy and Pain ... Rodeo Returns to Fairgrounds
The IPRA World Championship Rodeo returns to the Cumming Fairgrounds this Labor Day weekend.
The International Professional Rodeo Association has been bringing its event to the Cumming Fairgrounds for many years. Fairgrounds staff say it's a community favorite, with the event providing several hours of fast-paced entertainment for the entire family.

Barring a lack of competitors, the rodeo offers eight different classic competitions each night: Bull Riding; Bare Back Riding; Barrel Racing; Cowgirl Breakaway Roping; Calf Roping; Steer Wrestling; Team Roping; and Saddle Bronc Riding. There's also a patriotic opening ceremony, and special acts including comedic clowns and other entertainers.
The roping and wrangling reverie begins at 8 p.m. Friday, Aug. 30, and continues at 8 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 1 and at 7 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 2.  Tickets go on sale two hours before the start time each night, and are $15 for adults, $10 for children age 5-12 and seniors 65 and over; kids 4 and under are free.

Did you know?  The IPRA is the sport's second largest professional association, sanctioning some 300 rodeos throughout the U.S. and Canada each year.

Fridays at the Fairgrounds to Continue in September and October
Due to their popularity, Fridays at the Fairgrounds events have been extended into the fall. Come out Sept. 21 and Oct. 19 from 5 p.m. to 10 p.m. for plenty of fun!

Patrons can enjoy  food trucks, live music, vendors, cruise-in car shows and burnout contests, inflatables and character golf cart rides for kids, hot air balloon rides (when the weather permits), and more!

Admission is $5 for ages 13 and up; kids 12 and under are free and there is no charge for parking.

Southern Favorite Returns to Playhouse Throughout September
"Smoke on the Mountain," a Southern musical favorite, will again entertain audiences at the Cumming Playhouse from Sept. 6-30.

Young and enthusiast preacher, Mervin Oglethorpe, has recruited the Sanders Family to help bring his 1938, rural Baptist congregation into "the modern world" by leading the church's first-ever Saturday night singing.

The stop at the small-town North Carolina church marks the Sanders' first time back on the "Gospel circuit" in five years, and young Pastor Oglethorpe soon realizes he's in for much more than he bargained when the Sanders' zany personalities quickly take over his pulpit. Hilarious antics - tempered with genuinely heart-warming moments - quickly ensue, making the evening one that the Mount Pleasant Baptist congregation (and Cumming Playhouse audiences) won't soon forget!

This family-friendly musical features fantastic live bluegrass music from north Georgia's own, The Skillet Lickers, and heaping helpings of family-friendly comedy.

Show times are Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays at 8 p.m. and Sundays at 3 p.m.  Click here for tickets.

Cub Scouts and The Place Recognized by Mayor and Council
Mayor and Council welcomed Cub Scout Pack 207, comprised of fifth graders from Daves Creek Elementary, to lead the Pledge of Allegiance during their regular meeting on Aug. 21. Councilman Christopher Light met with the scouts prior to the meeting to discuss what it means to be an elected official and to answer questions from the scouts. They also briefly met Mayor Troy Brumbalow and Councilman Lewis Ledbetter before the meeting. Thanks to Cub Scout Pack 207 members, leaders and parents for visiting City Hall!

During the August work session, Mayor Brumbalow recommended that Council approve a $1,000 gift to The Place of Forsyth County in exchange for the work done by volunteers of the organization during the City's Rock of Ages Music Fest in June at the Cumming Fairgrounds. Council unanimously approved the gift, and the check was later presented to the The Place representatives Joni Smith, Director, and Melina Holt, Outreach Coordinator, by Mayor Brumbalow and Matt Smith, owner of Rosati's Pizza, which sponsored the event.

Among other business during the August meeting and work session, City Council:
  • Approved the addition of a Capital Improvements Element (CIE) to the City's Comprehensive Plan after holding the required two public hearings. The CIE is required in order for the City to be able to collect impact fees, and will now be approved by the Georgia Department of Community Affairs (DCA) and the Georgia Mountains Regional Commission (GMRC).
  • Approved the low bid from Jaspar Grading and Pipeline for milling and resurfacing of Pine Lake Drive.
  • Approved updates to the City's portion of the Statewide Mutual Aid and Assistance Agreement, and to the Local Emergency Operations Plan.
  • Approved an extension of a temporary moratorium on the issuance of development permits and building permits through Nov. 20, 2018.
  • Approved issuance of $50,000 to the Lake Lanier Association to be used for "rip-rap" around one of the unoccupied islands in Lake Lanier as part of a project to help with shore line erosion, which can make withdrawal and treatment of water more difficult for Cumming Utilities. The Lake Lanier Association has also collected funding for the project from the City of Gainesville, Gwinnett County, and the Tommy Bagwell Foundation.
  • Discussed hours of operation for historic demonstrations at the Cumming Fairgrounds' Heritage and Cherokee Indian Villages. Council ultimately voted to keep the same demonstration schedule as in years past, but wants the Fair Advisory Board to look into possible changes that might be made in the future to help lower costs.
  • Approved providing up to 10 VIP tickets and 20 one-day tickets to the Cumming Country Fair & Festival to elected officials, and six one-day tickets to all City employees. Additional tickets can be purchased by elected officials and employees at the advanced ticket price of $45 for VIP tickets and $5 for one-day tickets. Mayor Brumbalow and Councilmen Chad Crane and Jason Evans requested to go on record that they would not need that many tickets.
  • Approved changes to the City's parking ordinance that allow the City to have vehicles towed or issue fines to vehicle owners when non-City vehicles are parked in designated City parking lots for extended periods of time without prior permission.
  • Approved an agreement for cyber security services and a proposal for construction of a "Welcome to Cumming" sign in the area of Pirkle Ferry/Maple Street that would include electronic messaging for City events and paid advertising, at a total cost not to exceed $35,000.
  • Approved the following items for Planning & Zoning: A rezoning request for two land parcels totaling 3.69 acres on Bill Cantrell Memorial Road and Old Atlanta Road to Highway Business; and a vape shop application for Victorious Vapers, LLC to open and operate a vape shop at 1746 Market Place Blvd. Council also voted to postpone a decision on a conditional use permit for Brave Acres, LLC until the Sept. 4 work session.
  • Approved the following items for Utilities: Request to advertise for bids for a sewer force main extension on Hwy. 20 at Post Road; request to advertise for bids for a low pressure sewer system at Williams Circle, following requests from residents of the area who have paid approximately 50 percent of the total cost of the project in required sewer connection fees; awarded a bid for Sawnee Mountain water booster station, water lines and storage tank to the low bidder, Legacy Water Group, LLC; and awarded a bid for Phase IV of a west side 36-inch waterline installation and water tank project to the sole bidder, John D. Stephens.
