Things Are Happening at WWA
|
|
|
I have lots of information since the December newsletter that I'm excited to share with you!
First and foremost, we have a new Executive Director (Bruce Ross) coming on board on the 21st, and while he's not officially on duty yet, Bruce has been busy meeting with and talking to Board members and staff in the past week.
Our annual State Meeting and 3rd installment of the Hall of Fame Induction will be held on January 26th at the City Inn Bar and Grill in Berlin, starting at 9:30 am. You can meet Bruce Ross, listen to presentations by Project Director Peter Ziegler on habitat projects completed in 2018, hear Taylor Finger, WDNR Migratory Game Ecologist, discuss the 2018 season and 2019 proposed changes, meet Dr. Drew Fowler, WDNR's new Waterfowl and Migratory Gamebird Research Scientist, and listen to future research plans and get updates on how our chapters did on fundraising in 2018 and recognize top performers... In a word an awesome agenda this year.
Shortly after the State Meeting on the 26th, the Fox River Chapter will present the first fund raising banquet in 2019 at the same location at City Inn Bar and Grill! Surely, a full day of information and fun!
If you haven't signed up for the State Meeting or the Fox River Chapter Banquet there is still time, go online to register or contact the Fox River Chapter chair or volunteers.
Our first monthly drawing for the 2019 Calendar raffle was completed on the 9th and is off and running. Good luck to all that purchased a calendar this year. And, of course, thank you to all of the volunteers who helped sell these calendars, we couldn't do it without you!

Join Us at the 2019 State Meeting

Join WWA staff, board and volunteers for the annual state meeting of the organization. This is a great opportunity to meet and greet your fellow WWA volunteers and learn about the organization's plans and goals for 2019 and beyond.
The 2019 meeting agenda may be viewed
here; some highlights will include:
- The introduction of our new Executive Director, Bruce Ross
- Recognition of our high performing chapters, including the announcement of our 2018 Volunteer of the Year
- Induction of our 3rd Annual Hall of Fame Class
- Habitat Restoration program overview and Q&A session with WWA's Project Director Peter Ziegler
- Adopt-A-Wildlife Area updates and plans for 2019
- WDNR's Taylor Finger, Migratory Game Bird Ecologist and Drew Fowler, Waterfowl & Migratory Game Bird Research Scientist, will present on the observations from the 2018 "Early Teal" season followed by a Q&A session.

Lunch will be offered at no cost to our attendees, donations to cover the cost will be accepted day-of and are appreciated but not required. So that we may plan for meals accordingly

Adopt A Wildlife Area Program Updates

Jackson Marsh Wildlife Area updates: On January 13th, the Ozaukee/Washington County PF Chapter hosted a work day involving chain saw, brush cutting and herbicide work in three separate focus areas. A WWA team composed of Mike Depies, Jim Freck, Mike Alaimo, Don Guenther, Ron Churchill, Anne Churchill, Greg Rausch and Bruce Russ, along with two PF members, helped to clear the edge of an access lane used by the DNR to maintain Jackson Marsh Wildlife Area. Crews worked from 8am to noon and were awarded with hot soup and sandwiches from the PF chapter. The weather was about as good as it could get in January. Work hours today from WWA volunteers become part of our AWA contribution for this year.
Chainsaw work should now get get kicked into high gear through March. All AWA teams should be considering a couple of projects in the first quarter. The hours rack-up and become a significant portion of the overall 100 hours per year.
Look for more details coming up on the following Wildlife Areas (WA's):
- Lake Mills WA nesting island willow clearing as part of the new grant.
- Rome Pond WA grassland clearing resumed from last year.
- Paradise Valley WA willow eradication in numerous locations in the NE corner of the Bark River Unit. Potential work on School Section as well.
- Chain Saw Training for WWA and PF at Jackson Marsh, which can benefit any SE WI volunteers needing this valuable training.
- Big Muskego WA project day. The DNR is reviewing potential work sites to share with our WWA team.

Congratulations to all for a successful calendar raffle. We came close to last year's sales record and we still have calendars on hand if you know of any late comers who would like to get in even though they missed out on the January drawing. Let's sell out next year. All of you who still have calendar stubs and money to turn in, please have it all collected so you can get it to Kelcy at the State Meeting or mailed in to her by month's end. Thanks for another fantastic year. The calendar committee will be meeting shortly to discuss the 2020 calendar. If you have any ideas on how to make it better to increase the sales please contact us. Again, Thank You for a great job this year. Let us carry this energy forward to our fundraising events this year.
If we look back, we will see that forming community partnerships (getting donors and sponsors) was the reason many of our chapters have met their goals. January is the time local businesses and companies have new budgets available for donations. Those chapters with spring events need to renew your partnerships with these friends now. If you have a fall event, send them a thank you note and take that opportunity to remind them of your fall event plans. Ask them what you can do for them this year. Make them a banner or put them in a more prominent place in the banquet flier are all good ideas. If your chapter struggles getting donations, please talk to a chapter that does well at this, like the Green Bay, Northern Wetlands, Fox River or Valley chapters. I am sure your fellow volunteers would be more than willing to share techniques with you. The key to a successful banquet is getting donations, so make this a part of your chapter planning this year. Start now and benefit later.
I hope to see you at the State Meeting January 26th where you can begin learning more on the art of gathering donations. Please let us know how many of you are coming. Everyone is welcome. Come and honor the Super Goal winning chapters as this was a record year to accomplish that.
We will be introducing the new Statewide Class A Raffle at the State Meeting as well. It is a UTV and trailer and it will be at the meeting and the banquet after. Plan on attending the meeting on January 26th as this will be an informative and fun filled day. Let us know if you plan to attend, and you should, so we can have food for you. Sales for this Class A will count towards your chapter net. The UTV will be available for display at your events to help you increase ticket sales. The UTV will be available for you to have at other events to display to help you make sales as well. This will be on a first to ask, first to receive basis. We will have a calendar at the State Meeting for you to sign up for it. It will be drawn on August 26th so all chapter events before then have priority. We will be selling only 5000 tickets at $10 each or 6 for $50. Please help sell this out so we have additional funds for Peter to complete the numerous projects he would like to take on.

WWA'S 2019 CALENDAR RAFFLE
Thank you to everyone who purchased our 2019 Conservation Calendar! This raffle was again an immensely successful fundraiser for our organization's mission.
Drawings are held on the SECOND WEDNESDAY of each month and all drawings will be held at Marsh Inn, 220 S. Hwy W in Reedsville, WI, at 6:00 p.m. The drawing is open to the public and everyone is welcome to attend.
Winner's results are posted online by noon on the Thursday following the drawing and can also be obtained by request via email or by calling (262) 968-1722 or writing to PO Box 427, Wales, WI 53183.
