Funds raised support the Bucksport YMCA and the Bucksport Bay Area Chamber of Commerce. All the fun will wrap up at 3pm when the snow sculptures will be judged and the winner awarded their prize!

Our Community PTO will be joining us this year and will be selling warm food and drinks. All proceeds of food and drink sales benefit the PTO who assist with the needs and wants of the students and staff throughout the school year.

We hope to provide a fun, healthy, invigorating cold weather experience for children and their families in our local communities. This event helps us demonstrate that our multi-faceted communities are active destinations for those looking for exciting and diverse activities during the winter months.

Participate in the BMS Voice 2 Voice Poetry Contest by reading a poem to Students!
In collaboration with Opera House Arts, 5th grade ELA classes at Bucksport Middle School are participating in the Voice 2 Voice poetry declamation contest, which kicked off the morning of 1/19 with a visit by Maine’s Poet Laureate, Stuart Kestenbaum. Mr. Kestenbaum spoke about why he writes poetry, where he finds his inspiration, and how to get on “poetry time.” He also shared some of his poems, including the first poem he wrote many years ago as a 5th grader!

Voice 2 Voice is part of our year-long theme of “Telling Our Stories” and is focused on the speaking and listening standards in the ELA curriculum and providing students an opportunity to learn and practice public speaking skills. The project begins with a 30-day poetry recitation run where students hear one poem read aloud each day from the project’s anthology of 30 poems. After the recitation run, a teaching artist will visit throughout the month of March to help student select, analyze, memorize, and present a poem. Students will connect their voice to the voice of the poet through the poem. Winners from the class round will perform their poems for the school and three winners will travel to the Stonington Opera House to compete against students from other Hancock County schools in April.

Our goal is to invite community members in to read the poems as part of the recitation run so that the students can hear a variety of voices from our community and see that poetry is something that people from all walks of life are interested in. The recitation run stretches from 1/19 to 3/2 and would involve a 5 to 45 minute commitment, depending on how many classes the speaker reads to, so there is a lot of flexibility to work around people's busy schedules. If you are interested please contact Todd West, Principal of the Bucksport Middle School.

IRS News
The Internal Revenue Service and its partners across the country remind taxpayers about the Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC) on EITC Awareness Day. January 26th marked the 12th year of this awareness campaign to alert millions of low- and moderate-income workers who may be missing out on this significant tax credit.

There are more than 250 total outreach events and activities scheduled to promote EITC Awareness around the country.

Millions of taxpayers who earned $53,930 or less during 2017 may qualify for EITC for the first time, making awareness critical. Local officials and community organizations nationwide hold events on EITC Awareness Day highlighting this key tax benefit.

Workers, self-employed individuals and farmers who earned $53,930 or less last year could receive larger refunds if they qualify for the EITC. Eligible families with three or more qualifying children could get a maximum credit of up to $6,318.

For those without a qualifying child, they could get up to $510. Unlike most deductions and credits, the EITC is refundable. This means those eligible may get a refund from the IRS even if they owe no tax. In 2017, almost 27 million taxpayers received over $65 billion in EITC. The average amount of EITC received was $2,445.

The IRS recommends that all workers who earned $54,000 or less learn about EITC eligibility and use the EITC Assistant to find out if they qualify.

Refunds
By law the IRS cannot issue refunds before mid-February for tax returns that claim the EITC or the Additional Child Tax Credit (ACTC). The IRS must hold the entire refund — even the portion not associated with EITC or ACTC. This change helps ensure taxpayers receive the refund they deserve and gives the agency more time to detect and prevent errors and fraud.
The IRS expects the earliest EITC/ACTC related refunds to be in taxpayer bank accounts or debit cards starting Feb. 27, 2018, if they chose direct deposit and there are no issues with the tax return.

Getting Paid to Talk, Making Money with your Voice

Whether you've been told you have a great voice, had compliments on your speaking style, or use effective communication in a current profession, this workshop will give you a behind-the-scenes look at how people make money every day with their voices.

From audio books and training material, cartoons, documentaries, commercials and more, this workshop will introduce you to the growing field of voice-over. Today, opportunities for voice professionals have increased dramatically and unlike a decade ago, the range of voices cast for these opportunities continue to grow. Skilled voice professionals are more in demand than ever before.

Join us to learn what the pros look for and how to avoid many common mistakes. We'll help you avoid web-based pitfalls and instead develop an action plan designed to build lasting success close to home! We’ll discuss industry pros and cons, answer questions, and play samples from working voice professionals. We'll also give you an opportunity to record a short script under the direction of your instructor.

This seminar is fun, realistic, and a great first step for anyone interested in the voice over field.
Making Maine Work 2018: Business Leader Survey
The Maine State Chamber of Commerce, Educate Maine, and the Maine Development Foundation are partnering on a business survey to identify the investments and policies that are needed to support the strengthening of our workforce as well as long-term economic growth in the state. This survey is a follow-up to the Making Maine Work survey that was conducted in 2010 with more than 1,000 business leaders. We look forward to seeing how far we've come in meeting the needs expressed eight years ago.

Based on the findings from the survey and review of existing conditions and policies, the group will articulate a common vision and develop a set of goals with specific action steps to move Maine forward. The call to action will be used to shape the upcoming gubernatorial elections.

We are inviting you to complete this survey and share your thoughts on the key issues impacting economic growth in Maine.

You may have received this invitation from more than one source. PLEASE COMPLETE THE SURVEY ONLY ONCE, so that we do not double count responses. We appreciate your understanding of any cross-posting.

The survey takes about 10 minutes to complete. Please respond by February 7, 2018.

Start the survey by clicking on this link: Maine Business Survey (or paste https://www.research.net/r/5XQL7LB into your browser)

Thank you for your time and attention to complete the survey and for your commitment to Maine's future. Your participation is vital to this work! Please contact Melanie Baillargeon at melanieb@mainechamber.org with any questions or concerns.

Best regards,

State Workforce System Offers Help Finding and Training Employees
Employers in Maine are already thinking ahead to the coming summer, and many are wondering where they will find the workers needed for a successful season.

Other employers are looking even further ahead, wondering how they are going to find enough skilled labor to expand and develop their businesses over the long term.

The Maine Department of Labor and its workforce system partners across the state are can assist Maine employers in finding answers to these questions.

Whether you need your existing workers to be trained in higher levels of skill, or whether you are seeking new employees to fill out your schedule, there are ideas and programs we can offer that are intended to help. Some solutions are available at no cost to employers.

Whether you are looking to hire one person; whether you need to increase the skills of 50 existing workers; or whether you just don’t know where to find any number of qualified employees, we should talk.

To find out more about how we might help develop your workforce future in 21st century Maine, despite the shortages in labor and skills we all face, call David Grima at 596-2600 or e-mail david.m.grima@maine.gov at the Rockland CareerCenter.

Bridge the Gap Race April 8, 2018
Held annually since 2012, Bridge the Gap has quickly gained popularity as one of Eastern Maine's rites of spring!

In 2017 Crow Athletics became the newest caretakers of this important community event, and changed the course slightly; both races continue to start at Fort Knox in Prospect, and cross the stunning Penobscot Narrows Bridge. The 10-Miler tours Verona Island from west to east, while the 3-Miler follows the scenic river walk. Both races finish on Main Street in the heart of downtown Bucksport!

We have been working closely Main Street Bucksport and we are thrilled to bring this race into their friendly downtown! In addition to hosting another successful race, our goals include encouraging runners (and their friends and family) to spend money in this former mill town that is working hard to revitalize itself -- there are so many exciting new businesses in town!

The first 300 who register or by March 1 (whichever comes first) will receive a commemorative sublimated beanie at bib pick-up from Atayne, Maine's performance outfitter; inspiring positive environmental and social change through the power of active lifestyles.
