by Gerry Lopez

Stephani Anson is the perfect definition of resilience. Those who know Stephani agree, she is also intelligent, driven and caring.

Stephani was born in Glenwood, but raised in Gypsum. She is currently attending Red Canyon High School in Edwards, and challenging herself by taking college courses at Colorado Mountain College in hopes to graduate high school with both her high school diploma, and associates degree.

Member Profile: Salvation Army

The Salvation Army overall has been around for a long time, helping people with everything from rent assistance to getting enough greens in their diet. Salvation Army Vail Valley often quietly swoops in when disaster strikes. Remember the Lake Christine fire in Basalt? The Salvation Army of Vail Valley fed the emergency workers. It has a food pantry in Avon that more locals than use than you know and stocks the one in Eagle at the Methodist Church.

This small but impactful organization has two full-time employees and relies on volunteers to really help, explains Tsu Wolin-Brown, the executive director (who happened to start out as a volunteer more than three decades ago).

Difference Maker of the Month:

Eric Benson is the kind of man who makes a difference, quietly and without fanfare. Every single day he takes the time to listen and works to put a change in place - for the better - when necessary.

Eric is a Town of Avon police officer and the school resource officer (SRO) for Avon Elementary School. And the way he talks, it's more than a job. "As a school resource officer, I get to spend time in the elementary school. My focus is on mentoring students, teaching in classes and overseeing the safety of the staff and students," he explains.

SURO: Justice for Suicide Attempt Survivor
October 18 | 5:30 p.m. | Colorado Mountain College | Edwards

Utilizing new methods for understanding recovery can help us develop more inclusive
definitions, measurements, and services for survivors of suicide attempts. This workshop will center psychiatric justice in the recovery experience. Psychiatric justice refers to the proactive reinforcement of policies, practices, attitudes and actions that produce equitable power, access, opportunities, treatment, impacts and outcomes for people living with
mental health conditions, their loved ones, and their allies. Throughout history, the mental health system has criminalized and pathologized suicide attempt survivors, and in many ways continues to systematically exclude, punish, and discriminate against them.
