Let's help Father Ladislaus
bring the Eucharist to more Ugandans!

Dear Friends,
Our special visiting priest and good friend Father Ladislaus lives in Our Lady Source of Joy parish, 103 miles west of Kampala, Uganda.  He and four priests live in one house and share the task of bringing mass to 55 churches.  On Ugandan roads, this proves difficult and time-consuming.  As a result, the people in those churches receive the Eucharist once every two months. On the other Sundays, they get together to read scripture and pray, but they have no access to mass.

Father's Bishop has asked them to raise funds for and build a second house for priests so that they can divide the 55 churches into two groups and reach the rural parishioners much more frequently.  When the house is completed, the Bishop will assign more priests to the area.
Locally, they have already raised about $20,000, but they need a lot more.

The St. John Book Club is reading Monsignor Quixote by Graham Greene. The story begins with Father Quixote, a village priest, being elevated to the rank of monsignor through a clerical error. He sets out for Madrid to buy purple socks appropriate to his new station with his friend Sancho. At only 221 pages, it is a quick, entertaining read. The date for our next meeting is Thursday, January 31st at 7pm in the Admin Building.

Before the New Year gets old hat, here are a couple of prayers for a good start.

Lord, we pray that this New Year will bring us closer to You. Help us to truly celebrate the gifts You have graciously given us and use them to serve You and spread Your word. May we also see and love You in all the people we meet, so that in turn, they can see You in us. In this New Year, let us realize that every action of ours no matter how great or small enables us to be in touch with You. Let us accept You in our lives, in the way it pleases You, as Truth, to be spoken, as Life, to be lived, as Light, to be lighted, as Love, to be followed, as Joy, to be given, as Peace, to be spread about, as Sacrifice, to be offered among our relatives, friends, neighbors and all people. Amen.

Steer the ship of my life, good Lord, to your quiet harbour, where I can be safe from the storms of sin and conflict. Show me the course I should take. Renew in me the gift of discernment, so that I can always see the right direction in which I should go. And give me the strength and the courage to choose the right course, even when the sea is rough and the waves are high, knowing that through enduring hardship and danger in your name we shall find comfort and peace.
[From St. Basil of Caesarea (ca. 330-379) via Susan Pitchford and the January issue of Give Us This Day.  Thanks, Susan.]
