SHS art students garner recognition, support refugees through Memory Project
Stoughton High School art students have been quite busy in the last month.
Last week, SHS junior Briana Skerpan was selected as an Honorable Mention 2019 Scholastic Art Award winner for her
comic art
.
Five students in the Advanced Art class, meanwhile, recently participated in the Memory Project to support child refugees from Myanmar.
The Memory Project is a youth nonprofit organization that gathers photos of children facing substantial challenges, such as extreme poverty, violence or family loss, and partners with student artists to create portraits of those children. The children live in orphanages, slums, and refugee camps and have few items of personal value.
SHS Advanced Art students received photos of children from the Rohingya ethnic minority that fled genocide in Myanmar last year and are now living in a refugee camp on the border of Bangladesh. Our students used those photos to create pictures of six kids. For these children, who have rarely seen photos of themselves, the portraits will be gifts they could never have previously imagined.
Last month, two Advanced Art students were accepted into and received scholarships to attend art schools.
Nick Arnett was accepted into and received a substantial scholarship for the School of Art Institute-Chicago. Nick Walker was accepted into the Kansas City Art Institute and Minneapolis College of Art and Design. Walker also received scholarships for both schools.

Students learn about opportunities in health care field during visit to MCW
In November, Stoughton High School students enrolled in Anatomy & Physiology, Health Career Field Study, Certified Nursing Assistant, Medical Terminology and Emergency Medical Responder traveled to the Wisconsin Medical College in Milwaukee (MCW) for a Cadavers as Educators event.
The session started with an introduction by an anatomy faculty member at MCW, Dr. Todd Hoagland. Students then proceeded to the cadaver lab where they spent the majority of the time. Students were separated into smaller groups and then cycled around the lab to different stations. Students learned about GI, thorax, upper/lower extremity, brain anatomy, as well as health behaviors that have an impact on health status.
At the end, students participated in a short question-and-answer session with medical students to talk about about health careers and paths to health related fields. It was a great experience for all involved!
