You Need to Know
  • Reminder! If your student misses more than three days of school, a doctor's note stating s/he is able to return to school is required. [Please see Student and Family Handbook, page 9, under the section, Absence, that begins on page 8.]

  • 2020-2021 Registration materials will be sent home with your student(s) this month.

  • All students must be supervised by a parent after school hours while on school grounds

  • Cell phones and other electronic devices may not be turned on or used during the school day, on field trips (unless permission is given by the teacher), or during after-school activities. If used, they will be collected and held for pickup by the parent. The school will not be liable for lost, broken or missing phones and devices that are brought to school. Unauthorized use of cell phones and devices will result in a behavioral detention and confiscation of the device, which will be held for pick up by the parent or guardian. Suspension of the student may also result. Immanuel reserves the right to search student cell phones and devices if there is reasonable suspicion that there has been a violation of school rules. Before 8 AM and after 3:30 PM, students are to keep their cell phone and other devices on silent or vibrate and out of sight. Cell phones are not to be used for unsupervised entertainment purposes on school grounds or on field trips.

  • Students in grades K-G6 received reading logs for the Six Flags Reading program, Read to Succeed. Students are required to read six hours between now and Apr. 15. New this year is that all minutes will be recorded on students' elogs online. Instructions on registering and completing logs is included on the flyer that all students received this week in their Friday Folders (K-G5) or in their mailboxes (G6). If you have any questions, please contact your child’s teacher or Mrs. Suydam.
Principal's Corner
by Donna Laughlin, Principal
Our first week back from Christmas break was filled with basketball, science, prayer, and the celebration of Epiphany.
  • Our preschoolers celebrated Epiphany by learning about the wise men and their journey to see baby Jesus. Thanks to the availability of essential oils, they were able to learn firsthand what frankincense smells like. Although they had a hard time saying the word correctly and sometimes called it Frankenstein, they knew and understood that it was an expensive gift fit for a King.
  • Our Communications Club led our Epiphany chapel for Grades 1-8. With the help of Pastor Kennaugh and Lori St. Vincent, they chose the Bible verse and songs, wrote and delivered the message, and led our school in prayer.
  • Erica Ciro visited our middle school classes and led a three-day seminar on prayer during their religion classes. Students learned many engaging ways to pray. Our goal was to help them further develop their prayer life and to see that God desires for us to go to Him in prayer, that He hears our prayers, and He answers them faithfully.
  • Our second graders explored STEM concepts using kits that were purchased this year with PTL funds. We are also implementing Next Generation Science Standards throughout our school with the help of PTL funding for our new Inspire science series. This week our fourth graders were launching plastic balls using plastic cups and balloons; their objective was to learn about how different variables affect the transfer of energy. Our middle schoolers are also learning about the transfer of energy and kinetic potential by constructing pendulums and double pendulums.
  • Our basketball and cheer season are in full swing. All of our teams played two games this week, and our cheer team cheered for all of our home games. Our student athletes for give their best effort no matter what the score is, and I am especially impressed by their Christian sportsmanship. I thank God for giving us dedicated coaches who teach not only skills and fundamentals, but most importantly they teach the way God wants us to glorify Him with our various talents. Our coaches disciple our student athletes, and it is heartwarming to see what God is doing through all of this. We have been blessed with numerous alumni who are now in high school and college who regularly return to Immanuel to watch games and sit on the bench with our teams and coaches. They also mentor our teams during practices and pray with them before and after games. To God be the glory for this wonderful gift.

This month you are invited to participate in an intentional effort to pray for ONE person you know to come to know Jesus as Savior. Its that simple! Here’s how it works: pray for one person to come to know Jesus for one minute at 1 PM each day during the month of Jan. It’s that simple and it’s that important. We hope you will join us in trusting God to do an amazing work in the life of someone you know, and in the process trusting God to do an amazing work in your own life!
Online Option for Donating to Chapel Offerings
If adults would like to donate to charities that our students support through their chapel offerings, that can now be done online by clicking on the link here .

We encourage students to continue to bring their chapel offerings to place in the plate or box during chapel, as this is a tangible way for them to learn about stewardship and supporting God's work in His Kingdom.

Each month during the school year a different charity receives 100 percent of chapel offerings collected. The charities for the remainder of the school year are listed below.

  • Jan. – LCC Comfort Dogs Human-care and compassion ministry utilizing specially trained purebred Golden Retrievers.
  • Feb. – Adopt-A-Student at Concordia Seminary Financial support for a future Lutheran Church-Missouri Synod pastor.
  • Mar. – Hearts for Jesus/Lutheran Heritage Foundation Translates and distributes Bibles, Luther’s Small Catechism, and Bible stories in more than 100 languages.
  • Apr. – Voice of Hope Ministry to inmates at Stateville Correctional Center in Crest Hill, Illinois.
  • May – Phil’s Friends Provides support and hope to those affected by cancer.
