May 2018

Welcome, May! The weather is warm and the soil is perfect for us all to get outside and work on projects.

Thinking about projects, have you thought
about   container gardening? They help add  diversity to both small and large gardens and are ideal if you are limited to a patio, deck, small yard or only have a small area of sun. They can provide instant color, a focal point, and serve both an ornamental and utilitarian  purpose by providing fresh herbs and vegetables close to your kitchen. We have a wide selection of pottery and plants (both ornamental and culinary) and organic potting mix here at  Unity Church Hill Nursery  to  help you create your ideal planter. Want to learn more? Here is an  article in Rodale's Organic Life with more information about container gardening.

Two other items that make a great addition to a garden, especially now as we are moving into warmer, drier weather,  are bird baths and fountains.
These water features not  only  attract birds but also beneficial insects and frogs to your garden.  In addition to creating a more habitable space for wildlife, water and its tranquil sound also creates a calm, peaceful space for us. Come take a look through our extensive inventory to find what will help turn your garden into a
peaceful oasis.

Here at the Farm , we are finally wrapping up
some projects that we started this winter: our new greenhouse and high tunnels are now completed and one has already been planted with early tomatoes. We will grow ginger and other summer veggies in the other and also plan to grow greens through the winter. From our existing high tunnel that we planted back in March, we are now harvesting some fresh greens, radishes, and bok choy that are
available for purchase here at the Nursery in the main building (M-Sa), at Chestertown Natural Foods , and soon at the  Chestertown Farmers' Market. We will reopen our farm
stand in June and will be open on Fridays and Tuesdays from 3-5.

Having our own greenhouses allows us to grow vegetable, herb, and flower starts both for us to plant here at the farm and also to have some available to sell. We currently have a wide selection of vegetable and herb plants including heirloom, cherry and roma tomato varieties, eggplants, bell peppers and hot peppers, summer squash and zucchini, cucumbers, basil, chives, thyme, and more. With the arrival of May's warmer weather, we've now started planting our summer crops here at the farm. We invite you to stop by and take a look at what we have growing.

Thank you all for your continued patronage and support. Please share our newsletter with all of your friends.   :)
