Youth Spotligh t:  Caroline Dewell
by Carol Johns on, community education manager

According to Business Insider, snap streaks have become the most important metric for teen friendships. In c ase you hav e no idea what a snap streak is, I will tell you. It is when you send direct snaps (via t he app Snapchat) back and forth in a 24 hour period with one friend for a long duration of time. Think  200 days long. In some extreme cases, 1000 days l o ng. This month's Eagle River Youth Coalition's Youth Spotlight, Eagle Valley High School junior Caroline Dewell, tells me she doesn't have time for snap streaks.
"I know people who have ended friendships over the streak being lost," said Caroline recently to me over her Moose Trek blend at Yetis, while I sipped the Lavender Lemonade. It's not that she is against social me dia. "I ma ke time for online group conversations," she tells me matter of factly. With teens living and dying these days over keeping their streaks going, Caroline is focusing on SAT's, earning money for college, practicing singing and volunteering.

"I share a room with my little sister and she thinks I sing too much," Caroline shared.  "I work very hard to learn a new note and when I master it, I want to sing it over and over again. It makes me happy," she continues.

Member Profile: Bright Future Foundation

Bright Future Foundation is this month's Member Spotlight. The mighty organization does so much good, but we all wish its services weren't so needed. BFF is the county's community-based domestic violence and sexual assault response agency and serves more than 670 clients through crisis interve ntion, advocacy and long-term healing services each year.

It all started in 1983 when a nun from Minturn ran a newspaper ad asking for help to support local women in crisis. In response, a small circle of women gathered at the chapel to discuss the issues, chart a course of action, and pass the hat to fund the first mailing of the new organization. The organization was incorporated and registered with the state of Colorado as a nonprofit in February 1984, and eventually became Bright Future Foundation (BFF).

Difference Maker of the Month: Evan Weatherbie

Everyone has that memory of not fitting in, that slightly anxious feeling of being different, the odd one out. Many of us leave those memories in the past without a backward glance, but with a feeling of gratefulness not to have to go through 'that' anymore.

Evan Weatherbie, M. ED., Associate Professor of Transitional Education at Colorado Mountain College, remembers not fitting in and has embraced helping others to find a place that is accepting and welcoming - without exception. He is a catalyst of the Gender and Sexuality Alliance (GSA) of Eagle County. It started, he explains," as a result of community input concerning the need for a space for people to come together to learn about and share in topics relating to the LGBTQIA+ communities."

Youth Leaders Council & Youth News

After about two hours of public comment and council discussion, including honest and thoughtful input from local youth and public health professionals and parents, Avon town Council voted to unanimously support Tobacco 21. This will raise the minimum age for purchasing tobacco products and all vaping products sold in the town of Avon to 21 as well as adding local licensing. Counselor also supported putting on the ballot to tax payers this November a proposal for an additional three dollars per pack of cigarettes and 40 percent for non-other tobacco products. Avon is a public health leader, as the first local T21 municipality. A gigantic thank you to everyone who was a part of this!

Earlier this  summer, the Youth Leaders Council got together to plan for the year... and have some fun too! T he r etreat was inspiring, and very well produced by Gerry and key YLCers. It truly felt "youth led, adult supported."

News from Communities that Care

Our incredible set of volunteers has been meeting to begin the process of developing an action plan for the 3 strategies selected by Eagle County.  The three strategies selected are:
  • Leverage a State-wide Media Campaigns to Change Community and Social Norms
  • Recruit and Reward Youth Participation in Community Coalitions
  • Build Public Support for Conventional Enforcement of Existing Laws
This is the foundational work that will lead to real, tangible changes in our county.
Because our community needs to be ready to receive all the news about the great offerings that the process will provide, the Community Outreach and Public Relations Work Group has met and determined that our growing process will now require some branding.  It is the goal of the work group that at least 50% of individuals in the county, when they hear the "brand", they will think of all of the great things that the process will yield.  Be on the lookout for the great next step in the near future.
The Communities That Care Process has 5 stages and Eagle County is now in the 4th stage.
