Hawes Highlights: Stay Informed!
This Week in Review
Hawes Elementary School is committed to all students succeeding in a rigorous core curriculum. We believe in the importance of a strong home and school connection to ensure that our students acquire the skills needed to be life-long learners. We believe in teamwork, collaboration and mutual respect. We embrace risk-taking, creativity and an openness to new ideas and technologies. We believe that a positive self-esteem and social responsibility are goals for all and that our students, through a love of learning, will be challenged to reach their highest potential! We believe in aiming for the remarkable!
Principal's Message

For many last week felt like the beginning of a new school year - new classroom, new procedures and more. For all who helped, supported our students and teachers through the transition and adjusted to a different routine in the morning or at dismissal, we thank you! It really does take all of us to make these transitions smooth!

On Friday, as I tweeted out a picture of the 11 new Chromebook carts that Mr. Bob and I delivered to classrooms, I did a little happy dance and had a moment (actually several) of reflection. When I first joined the Hawes community 7 years ago, our connectivity issues were less than stellar, wireless was almost non-existent and having functioning, useful technology was a dream we shared. Through the work of many - staff, PTA, our district office - we worked to improve our connectivity and access to the Internet and have evolved in our use of integrating technology in meaningful ways. On Friday, we took an giant leap forward and officially became a school with 1:1 devices for all of our students. With this milestone (happy dance), the possibilities to accelerate learning for our students is real! I can't wait to see how we learn and evolve! Thank you to Measure Q for making one of our dreams a reality!

Attendance for Month 4: 98% is our goal!

The following classes had the highest attendance rate in the grade level: K - Mrs. Steele; 1 - Mrs. Oakes; 2 - Mrs. Zeutzius; 3 - Mrs. Wisman; 4 - Mrs. De Stefano; and 5 - Mrs. Africano. EDI Data Collection
Our district participates in the county-wide EDI (Early Development Index) program. This involves our kindergarten teachers completing information on our kindy students' readiness and preparation for entering kindergarten. Your child is not directly involved nor engaged in this survey; only the teacher's input relating to each child is provided. EDI data allows us to have the best picture of where the needs and successes are located in our county and neighborhoods. With these data, we can work together to make the best changes in services and programs to ensure that every child, family, and community is ready for school. The EDI is helpful not only in telling how children are developing, but also in predicting health, education, and social outcomes. Parents may opt out of their kindergarten child's participation in the EDI by contacting Carolyn Werthheim at our district office or your child's kindergarten teacher. Additional information can be found on the attachments below along with contact information for any questions you may have.

For more information regarding this data collection, please click here .
Rainy Days
If it is raining in the morning at drop off, students report directly to their classrooms.

If it is raining at dismissal, pick up is from the classrooms and the front and back gates will open at the first dismissal time!

If it is raining at lunch, we always need extra hands to help supervise our students as they eat lunch in the classrooms!
Independent Study Contracts
When requesting an independent study contract, please remember:

  1. Require an absence of 5 or more days.
  2. Will not be approved during SBAC testing.
  3. Requests should be made at least two weeks in advance of your trip.
  4. Requests should be made to the office so that the office can prepare the contract, the teacher can prepare the work, and the contract can signed by all parties (teacher, principal, parent, and student) before your trip.
  5. Upon your return, the completed contract, including all work, must be returned to your child’s teacher.
